I'm an incoming freshman to WashU, and I'm just about done with my room and board app. I was just wondering, though, is the $35 charge for the South 40 Fitness Center worth it? I'd like to stay fit during college. Are there other ways to get fit (with treadmills and weights) besides the south 40 fitness center?

The Athletic Complex is a good walk from the dorms and (from what people told me) more used by athletes than by normal students. I think the convenience is definitely worth it. I mean, what's $35 dollars compared to 15 pounds? Besides, most gyms cost about that a month.

I'm confused. Are you saying the $35 membership is a good deal? From what I thought, the South 40 Fitness Center is different from the Athletic Complex. Could anyone clarify the differences between the two?

Also, I've heard that the south 40 fitness center doesn't have many weights; only treadmills and other cardio machines -- thus, girls go there more than guys do. Clarification?

I think Rachel is saying that the $35 is a reasonable deal because of the South 40 Fitness Center's location is ideal and most fitness gyms around the US would be much more expensive... I am definitely signing up for it!

The fitness center is like any small fitness center. There are weight machines in roughly less than half of the room area. Then there are treadmills (approx 10?) lined up in front of the windows. In line with that are two ellipticals. Then there's another line behind that that has approx. six ellipticals, 4 things that look like some sort of elliptical but aren't (I'm not the most excercise-literate person), two stair steppers, two of each of two different sorts of bikes. There's also a small area with hand weights, and yoga matted area for stretching, crunches, etc....then there are Tvs with closed captioning....There's also a pretty decent sanitation system.
I hope I've somewhat helped in describing the Fitness Center.

In terms of location, it is ideal. It's in the same building as Bear's Den (where you'll end up eating most of your meals on the S40). I'm renewing my membership for next year.

The athletic complex---I would say is somewhat intimidating.....and rather farther away. I'm sure if you were used to it (ie, an actual athlete) it would be fine. Again, I'm not the most excercise-literate, so probably someone else who actually does use the Athletic Complex would have a better insight on the differences between the two.

Where are swimming pools located in WashU? Also, do I need to pay membership fee in order to use it?

There is a swimming pool in the Athletic Complex. I am not sure if a fee is necessary, but I can't imagine they would charge students to use it.

South 40 fitness is great for convenience. If you want to do free weights, the weight room at the ac (athletic center) is free. However, to use the cardio equipment there you need to belong to the ac. Mostly upper classmen do this. The pool is free, but only available to the public (ie, non swim team members) during limited hours.

Basically, if you want the use of treadmills etc you are going to have to pay for it, and $35 is really not bad.

how crowded is the south 40 fitness room?
Do people have to wait to use the treadmills, etc?

Generally that depends on when you go. Early in the day there tend to be not many people. Right before they close(either midnight or nine depending on what day it is) it tends to be crowded. They do have a 30 minute policy if there are people waiting to use the machines, so it does tend to work out. I've never had to wait, but then that could be just because I don't go as often as I maybe should. : )
