Big? Small? lots of equipment? Good trainers?

From what I've heard, they're absolutely fantastic. :) I wish I could give more details, but that's what a friend of mine who attends told me.

there is one in appel, right near all the frosh dorms. It has elipticals, treadmills, bikes, ergs, freeweights, um, what else should a gym have? I dunno, I haven't used it, but the equipment is all new and shiny and not broken...

The fitness centers are gret. One nice aspect is that the treadmills have book holders so that you can read while you run. (Multi-tasking :) )

Wow, you can do that? I don't get motion sickness, but I would get sick if I tried to do that. :p

Ah! That's awesome! I do that when I need to study for mid-terms/benchmarks/finals. :p I thought it was only me... I ended up constructing this little wood plank shelf. hah.

do students need to pay a fee to use these gyms?

students have to pay a gym membership that is I think $180 per year. Take advantage of the phys ed requirments...my friend is taking a rock climbing class and he loves it.

Oh man, when I visited Cornell I got the special treatment (was along with my boyfriend who was a recruited athlete) meaning tours of athletic facilities, etc.. they were absolutely great! State of the art stuff, friendly atmosphere... Cornell is a pretty cool place. =)

Gym membership is 135 per year, which is really cheap. Helen Newman is on North and is much larger than Appel. The equipment is good, but during busy times you can't always get on a cardio machine when you want it (to avoid this you could just sign up earlier in the day).

facilities are very nice, and if you play a varsity sport, there are numerous other venues where you can work out on central campus, all nicely equipped.

For North Campus, while the facility is nice and well maintained, if you actually lift (i.e. bench, free weights, etc....) there is, in my opinion, a major shortage of equipment - there are only 2 squat cages (which can be used for benching w/ a free bench) and only 1 actual bench press (which, in my and my friends opinoin doesn't feel right for benching), and only about 7-8 free benches - for the 3000+ on North Campus plus any other students who want to come in.

Teagle Hall in Central Campus looks to have much more equipment and much less crowding, but thats ~20-30 minutes of walking from North.

The athletes (on D1 teams, club teams don't get access) have really nice stuff, so if you're playing a sport you're set.

if you're athletic enough to want squat cages, you should be able to walk from north to teagle in way under 30 minutes ;)

Beautiful facilities, including those that freshman have easy access to. Both Appel and Helen Newman have gorgeous equiptment, and are never really too crowded.

thats good to know; athletic facilities are a big issue for me- i try to get in their 5-6 times a week, however, i've been feeling this sense that cornellians have no time for workouts. How do you fit it in?

haha just make time for it, like everything else, though sad as it seems, it seems like everything including eating sleeping and yes working out is a chore... (just kidding, it really isnt that bad at all).

I ice skate for over an hour almost every day of the 6 days a week the rink has free-skate. relaxing time to myself and good for me, too.

to anyone at cornell - do people go snowboarding/skiing? i know there's a phys ed class for it..but was wondering if there are places where students can snowboard/ski just for fun

I work out about 5 days a week, when I remember to. There's definitely time to go to the gym.

Greek peak. I have a season pass. It's like 30 minutes from campus. Because of the pass i can go skiing after class and into the evening (night skiing) and not have to worry about prices, which means i can just go for a couple hours. Also there is a big ski club. This year we are running trips to Sugarbush, Mad River Glen, Killington, Tremblant, Whistler/Blackomb, and Chamonix among other places. Also, for club members, there is a free bus to greek peak on saturdays. And yeah, I'm taking it for gym credit too.
