Is the University of Miami any good?

Well I'm thinking of going to the USA as an exchange student for a year and I'm after the sun, the sea, the city, the girls and strong academics. I will be studying mathematics.

The University of Miami, Florida seems to be in an almost perfect location. But the campus looks a bit bland and I'm not sure if it's the most reputable university.

The University of Miami is ranked #51 in America by the latest U.S. News and World Report.
It has very solid academics with the benefit of sun and fun which you say is high on your list. They have a great Medical Program and also their Marine Bio. Program is considered by some to be the best in the country. The current President (Donna Shalala) has done wonders in uping the emphasis on academics and downplaying the old “Suntan U” reputation. The campus is really beautiful and the access to places like Coconut Grove and South Beach can not be beat.

University Of Miami is an excellent college, definitely look into it if you’re interested

Hmm, I don’t know. Is 51st in America particularly good?

51 out of 4000 schools is pretty good. top 1.2% in the nation is not that bad…

Miami Triads!

How does it compare with the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and other schools?

UNC is not near any beach that I’m aware of.

UNC-Chapel Hill is better than UMiami but that doesn’t mean that it’s bad, UNC-Chapel Hill is one of the top schools in the country

UNC is ranked #30.

You have to decide what is most important, academics or overall experience.

Also which school has the better program for your major. These rankings take into account a lot of strange things to come up with their numbers. Look at the overall picture to decide. The diff. btw #30 and #51 is minor in my opinion.

Miami is on of the schools that tends to get bashed on this board (along with NYU), not that this means anything though. It is a really great school, end of story.
It has very good academics, very modern amenities, excellent athletics and a great location.
College is what you make of it. If you spend time networking, engaging in activities which build a resume and learning then you will be fine upon graduating.
