I am involved in a lot of theatre throughout the year. I’m usually involved in around 8 productions, a few of which I usually direct or assist direct and I work on some element of tech in all of them.
Is that a useful thing to put on college apps? I really love theatre and definitly plan to continue doing it.
Absolutely. What’s most important is that you really love it.
Yes! It also shows colleges that you can work well with other people, which is in important.
Theater provides many great skills.
- Working as a team (as already mentioned)
- Creativity
- Ability to perform on demand
- Fun! And Social! (desired by most schools)
- Intelligent (think of all of those words and concepts involved in theatrical productions)
- Spacial / visual reasoning
- Ability to make mistakes and keep going
- Public speaking
And the list goes on and on . . .
Absolutely. Even if you don’t plan on continuing, a theater EC shows an ability to work in a group, to think on your feet, to memorize lines (even my crew kid learned the show’s lines as he had to know when and where to go the light cues). It also shows that you can work on a deadline, show up on time and follow instructions.
My two kids who did theater made so many of their friends in that EC, much more than through anything else. My D (2009 HS grad) doesn’t do theater anymore but she does perform, singing and playing music alone and with friends. Her theater skills enable her to do that. S17 is actually pursuing a degree in theater tech as he found his passion and wants to do it as a living. He only tried it out in 6th grade because he didn’t get selected for Science Olympiad. He tells me often how thankful he is to have not been chosen.
