Is theft a problem in the dorms?

I have been reading about theft, particularly of laptops. Is this a problem at Tufts (South Hall) and has anyone purchased the laplock widget offered by the folks who rent the microfridge?

Do I really need a lock box/safe?

Thanks for all the advice and answers to my questions! It is really challenging to pack from the west coast, especially when doing TWO!

oh gosh, i can only imagine. i forget how easy it is that my parents can just drive me up with the full minivan from new jersey :)

anyway, I do know one guy in South that had his laptop stolen - I think he left it out in the lounge, and even though Tufts kids are cool and all have their own computers, someone probably figured they could sell it on ebay. Also, given that it was the guy in question...well he was probably stoned at the time, in all honesty LOL. I am well-known for leaving all my crap all over the lounge by my room and no one has ever taken it - because it's things like my calc book and notebook. No one steals things from inside rooms, that I know of - my roommate and I always left our door unlocked - but if you're worried, just lock your door. Only your roommate can get in that way. I don't think you need a safe...I just kept my jewelry and things in a small case on my dresser. It's really nice; as long as you're practical, keep things out of sight of the doorway and keep your door closed when you're not there, I'm sure you'll be fine.

i would definitely buy a laptop lock, but you can buy that at staples or target once you are here - i wouldnt buy the one they send you that mailer for, it's way expensive compared to just as safe ones you can buy at staples/target/etc

If you're careful, you'll probably never have anything stolen. Theft at Tufts happens but is not a huge problem. Unless you leave your laptop unattended in the library or another public place for eight or nine hours, the risk that it will be stolen is pretty small. Plus IIRC, there's a chip you can install in it so the police can track it if it goes missing. I'd definately buy a lock though.
