is there a correlation between sleep/gpa?

just wondering what u guys thought. i know some people that can get by with very little sleep. but for me, if i dont get at least 10 hours of sleep, i will be fallin asleep in class, losing concentration when trying to study or do hw, etc. and that sucks when you have little time to begin with to get things done.

ive tried drinking coffee/energy drinks before and they artificially keep my mind awake but when i try to do work or pay attention in class, my brain just doesnt function. its like having your eyelids held open so you dont fall asleep... it doesnt work well :(

don’t kid yourself. there’s no correlation.

try sleeping 7, 8, or 9 hours. everyone has a different circadian rhythm - maybe you’re waking up during a REM cycle instead of a lighter cycle. You have to find that sweet spot.

Also, digestion - aka eating a lot of food - also takes energy and may make you tired. Not saying don’t eat, but if you’re trying to bulk up or something, could be a factor.

But hell, I’m always tired these days. And I love sleep.

Not that I know of. I’m a straight-up hardcore sleeper, my friends call me “sloth” because I sleep so much.
Can’t say that my GPA is higher or lower than anyone else: 3.8.
I probably fit in the middle in that respect.

It just depends on who you are. If you need a lot of sleep to function, then yeah, your amount of sleep will probably correlate with GPA and you should try to manage your time wisely so you can be functional. I personally think in college you have way more free time than in high school, so there really is no reason that you can’t find the time to get a proper night’s sleep most of the time, though there will be late night papers and study sessions now and then that just seem to happen.

I can function on little sleep but I have lots of friends who are just all over the place without it. You just have to do what’s good for you because everyone is different.

Hey OP, I think I’m just like you. If I could, I would sleep 10 hours every day. In fact, most of the time I do and my GPA is 3.77. I sometimes go to sleep at 12 and wake up at 10 - it’s most comfortable to me. Anyway, if it helps you be more productive to sleep more than it’s worth it.

For example, you can do 2 hours worth of work in 2 hours if you had a good sleep or 2 hours worth of work in 4 hours if you missed out on a few hours if you slept. If that didn’t make sense, sorry I didn’t get enough sleep last night and I’m too lazy to change it. :P

^Yeah its da same for me too :stuck_out_tongue: Not in college yet but generally :D

On second thought, let’s hope not. Because it’s 3am and I can’t get to sleep and I have a last-minute-week-before-finals midterm tomorrow morning.

I so envy you. How do you get 10 hours of sleep every day? I barely get 7-8 and I do get tired a lot. Well I think it might help if you don’t eat before the lecture; I mean if you’re really starving then munch on something light. Otherwise if you had a big meal 1-2 hours before you might have a food coma or something. Sometimes sitting toward the front help too. Being close to the professor kinda intimidate you into not falling asleep

"Can’t say that my GPA is higher or lower than anyone else: 3.8. "

A GPA of 3.8 is definitely higher than most people.

Hm…my sleep pattern is 5 on weekdays, 10 on weekends. I have a 4.0. Most people I know who get more sleep have lower GPA’s than mine, so I doubt there’s a huge correlation…well…I mean, if you’re constantly fatigued from having little sleep, then you’re bound to do worse in school eventually, and your GPA will probably drop, but as for sleep directly = GPA? Nah, don’t think so.

Each person is different when it comes to sleep.
