Do doctors travel a lot or do they get stuck in one city if they find a job there?

Thanks.

Medical training requires relocation for most candidates, since medical school, possibly internship, residency and probably practice will require moving. Academicians pursuing fellowships, post-doc positions and academic positions will face more moves.

Private practice itself does not require much moving as long as the initial practice is a good "fit" and in a stable medical environment.

Oh thanks for your reply.

I thought medicine may require more travelling after all the fellowships and such, almost like Doctors Without Borders.

Thanks again, my$0.02

Any traveling doen by a doctor in practice is totally voluntary and due to decisions that particular physician has made - like joining medical mission trips.

That said, if you do want travel as a physician and see various parts of the country or world, you can pick up locum tenens positions. These are basically short term appointments to clinics wherever you may want to go. Some may be 2-3 weeks, international positions are more likely either 6 mo or a year long.

Locum tenens positions traditionally are filled by soon-to-retire physicians who are leaving a stable practice position. Traditionally, physicians who move around too much or work only locums positions are viewed with some suspicion when applying for permanent practice positions. (Unfair, perhaps, but common.)
