Is there a way around the Wharton admissions system?

Hey everyone!

I was talking to a friend earlier today. He graduated from my high school last year, and is going to Washington & Lee next year. He was planning on applying to UPENN, and but he applied ED to W&L, and found out that he had been admitted to W&L before the UPENN application was due (So he didn't apply). I was talking to him about schools I was interested in when I mentioned UPENN, and said that I would apply to Wharton. He exclaimed "NO!", and told me not to do that. He said that he was going to do the same thing, but someone told him to apply to one of UPENN's other colleges, then "try and transfer in to Wharton" after I was already admitted. I have never heard of this before. As someone who is really interested in going to Wharton, but doesn't have the best stats (Good GPA, but only a 31 ACT right now -- I am planning on taking it again in Sept.) should I consider trying to do this? Is there any validity or reason to what he is saying?

It actually sounds like it makes sense to me, but I don't want to get in to UPENN, only to find out that there is no way that I can actually do what I went there with the intention of doing. For example, I don't want to get in to the college of arts and sciences, only to find out that I can't transfer into Wharton.
Thanks in advance,

It’s extremely difficult to transfer into Wharton like this. I don’t think you should follow his suggestion.

@JalapenoGreens‌ So, I should just apply to Wharton even though it might lower my chances of getting in?

Apply to Wharton directly. The admissions office is well aware of people trying to game the system. It’ll be extremely difficult to try and transfer in, and if you would not be happy at UPenn without Wharton, it’s not worth taking the risk.

@HappyHelper‌ Thanks for the response! That’s what I was thinking. I assumed that it would be pretty obvious when I showed up on the first day and started asking about transferring to Wharton hahaha.

Yes I agree, apply directly into Wharton.

Are people saying this just because it seems “right” to do?

I’m in a similar situation, and I would be satisfied with admission to SEAS too, but obviously Wharton is #1.

How easy is it to transfer? What would I need to do?

@JalapenoGreens‌ thank you so much for the feedback!

@jchen97 I think it’s more than just being the right thing to do. If for some reason we weren’t able to transfer into Wharton, it would be a huge pain in the ass to be forced to go there and major in something that we didn’t originally intend to. That being said, I have heard that admissions for the other colleges at penn are easier than for Wharton. So I’m not sure what to think. IMO it’s kind of a gamble. We could shoot for the short term gain of getting in, but that could screw us in the long run.

Wharton and CAS knows that kids will do this. If you have all business ECs and you apply to CAS, its obvious you want to transfer in. As a result, its an easy rejection for trying to bypass the system.

@Oberyn‌ Thanks for the feedback, that’s what I was thinking!
