My D is currently signed up to take the AP Spanish test. She has done well in Spanish (3 years honors, 1 year AP) and there is a good chance that she will get a 4. However she said that there is absolutely no benefit to taking the test as Tulane does not give AP credit for languages. She was there for Honors weekend and they already advised her as to what level Spanish class she should take. She is planning to major in Finance and minor in Spanish (maybe). Before I let her cancel, is there ANY benefit to taking he test? I also told her to email her Tulane advisor and check.

I think she should. Even if she doesn’t get credit, she can possible place out of the foreign language requirement that many universities have. Why not? She should probably an adviser…but I think it will be more beneficial than anything.

Hi Cordave1992
But Tulane still requires her to take a language and she is definitely going there.

I looked it up for you:

[Tulane Admission: Advanced Placement](http://admission.tulane.edu/academics/ap.php)

If you get a 4/5 on the AP Spanish Language/Literature (there are entirely two different test) you get 4 credit hours and placed out of Spanish 2030.

Good luck! :D

Thank you! I see that now. I don’t know why she thought she would not get credits. I appreciate your help and I think she will be taking the test!

mumof2:

But remember, placing out of Spanish 2030 is not the same as fulfilling the language requirement at Tulane. Your D will still need to take one Spanish course (or, alternatively, two courses in a different language, if she hadn’t taken the other language in high school). Chances are she would take Spanish 2040, the next course in the series.

One other advantage of getting the AP credit is that she will have more credits, in total, which will result in a slightly higher priority assignment for class registration in future semesters (e.g. Spring, 2012).

Hope she does well on the AP test.

But I think it might not matter at all if taking a language is even required at Tulane - is it? This scenario for her only matters if she would not take spanish at tulane no matter what.

I’m pretty sure that a foreign language course is required at Tulane. The following sentences appear in the Undergraduate Curriculum booklet for Newcomb-Tulane College. (I believe that all undergraduates are in this College.)

“The study of foreign languages is an integral part of an undergraduate education, and knowledge of foreign languages is essential for having a broader perspective of our increasingly globalized world. All students must take at least one foreign language course at Tulane University AND demonstrate competency in that language at the 102/112 level.”

The only exception stated is for students entering Tulane as transfer students who can apply an approved foreign language course taken at the previous college.

So, in the case of mumof2’s daughter, taking the AP test with a 4 or higher would satisfy the competency criterion, but it would NOT satisfy the requirement to take an additional language course at Tulane.
