Is there any better ways to get to Davis?

Since it is going to be springbreak, I’m planning on attending Decision Davis next week with my parents even though I’m from Los Angeles. However, since Decision Davis takes place on a friday, it would mean that we have to leave at like 2 or 3 in the morning if we go by car to make it in time for the registration time period, which is like 8-10:30am i think. Of course, our time would have been much more flexible if only my mom didn’t have work on thursday, but obviously that’s not the case here. Is there any other suggestions that would help us save money and gas here? It’s not that I don’t want to go by car, but it’s just that the ride is sooooo long! I remember coming back to LA by car from San Francisco one time just turned me into a zombie from the ride. I can’t imagine what it would be like going to davis and coming back would be like. O.O

OH by the way, if there isn’t any better suggestions other than by car, my parents are thinking of lodging by davis after touring davis and then leave the next day (sat.). Do you guys know of any good and cheap hotels or motels nearby? Of course, i’ll be searching online too, but i just want to see some of your suggestions here.

Thanks in advance for the help! :)

If you want, you can take the Amtrak from LA up to Davis. There’s an Amtrak station right in Downtown Davis

In order for you to get to Davis in time on Amtrak you would have to leave at 7:10pm on Thursday. You’d take 2 trains and a bus and arrive at 8:02am. Since Mom has to work I would say drive.
We are in a similar boat, I have to work Friday till noon and we are an hour away by car. Not sure if she will be able to get a ride to get there before 10:30. She could take Amtrak, but our local station doesn’t get in till after 11am and the next closest station in morning traffic could take over an hour to get to. Since we are going on Amtrak there this weekend, told her if she doesn’t make admission day we will come back to do the housing tour on another date (we already have gone on the walking tour).

Is the train cheaper than driving?

Going by plane is actually not too expensive. Southwest and JetBlue had round trip tickets going for $138 ($69 each way). You’d fly from LAX or Long Beach to Sacramento then take the Yolo bus to Davis. That’s my plan since flying is so much faster and not much more expensive!

lol yolo bus
