Is there any hope for me?

'Ello!

I'm a high school student from New York, and I'm just wondering if I stand a chance for admission this year with my... rather mediocre grades. I have a 4.0 GPA and I recieved on the SAT I a 680 on the math section, a 720 on the critical reading section, and a 740 on the writing section. I also took the Sat II in Biology E and Math Level 1: 740 and 620, respectively. My AP scores are a 5 in Biology, a 4 in AP Language & Comp., and a 3 in AP Euro. I'm taking AP Lit and AP Calc AB in the spring, but I don't think that really counts. I have 5 years of English, Science, History, French, and Math under my belt and an honors regents diploma.

I've also fenced on my Varsity team since the 8th grade, but that doesn't really help me... Unless any of you happen to know if McGill does recruitments?

Sorry, I know you get enough of these posts but... any chance??

Go for it -- your SATs are well above the minimum required for U.S. applicants and your 4.0 GPA is impressive, assuming you took the most demanding courses available. As long as you meet the specific course prerequsites for your intended major, I'd say you have a solid chance.

Here's a link that outlines the course requirements for specific programs and minimum SAT/ACTs and Subject Tests for U.S. applicants:

biology815, definitely, definitely go for it!
one tip i have for you though is that SAT scores really don't matter all that much (if at all) when applying to canadian schools- but regardless, you have great scores AND an awesome GPA to boot so i think you certainly have great chances.

one thing to acknowledge though is that canada has so few universities that it really gives priority to its canadian students first. so the chances of getting in are harder for american students, just like our canadian chances are harder when applying to your american schools (only makes sense, right?).

on the bright side though, mcgill is probably the most international of all the canadian universities so your chances of getting in as an american there are definitely better than eslewhere in canada as long as you ahve competitive grades, which you certainly do!

hope that helped?

Thank you! You've definately helped. :-)

I just hope I get in, McGill's a great school.

And one more thing?: As a US student, do I need to send teacher recommendations? I remember looking at the website and they said no... but I've been reading other US students' posts and a few say that they have sent those in. Woops...
