Is this a death sentence?

does not taking calculus in high school look really bad on a college application? I want to go to a liberal arts school, and I don't want to do anything math-related for a major.

If you come out alive afterwards, it's probably not a death sentence.

if you CAN take calculus and you don't, then yes, it does not look good. but it's certainly no death sentance.

No!! Don't overextend yourself. If you aren't going into a math/science field, then focus more on other stuff! What is your major going to be?

Irrelevant ^

Your interests can easily change over time. For all we know he could turn out to be a math junkie when it comes time to choose a major.

I don't think it's that irrelevant. he said he wants to go to a LAC and doesn't plan to major in anything math related.
it really depends on the school though. it probably won't hurt you that much depending on what else you're taking instead and the admission requirements for the school.

No

it's olny bad is yo're going to the top schools, or you want to major in stuff like Math, engineering, specific sciences, and Business

Most top students do take Calc in HS. However, if the rest of your courses are strong, as is the rest of your app, it is far from a death sentence. In fact, I highly doubt it would hurt you much at all.

I don't think it's a death sentence. Don't worry about it.

I didn't take calc (in fact, I took some of the easiest math classes offered at my moderately competitive high school) and I got into 7 of the 8 schools I applied to and was waitlisted at the 8th.

Mind you, I did stress my love for humanities in my application (especially my essays) and I took rigorous classes in pretty much every other subject. I also have no interest in math- or science-related majors, and I think adcoms understand that.

Oh, and I totally sucked it up on the math part of the SAT, too, if that makes you feel any better.

There's a reason that colleges, even top ones, offer calculus courses. Well, besides the fact that some high schools don't offer calculus at all.
