I TOTALLY know! That's the one reason I was worried about boarding school. Well, at Milton, most weekends are open. You are free to leave campus if the rules of the Bule Card permit you to. (I don't know Blue Card details yet, sorry.)

You can go into Boston or fly to New York with a fried or family member. It's all up to you. However, there are closed weekends, very few of them if I'm not mistaken, and they require yout to stay on campus for certain activities.

Remember that a lot of the schools have Saturday classes (half day), so the weekend isn't all that long. I know from my son's school a lot of kids went into NY on some of the weekends. They took a bus from a depot about 20 minutes from campus.

What school does your son go to?

Maybe I should apply to Milton instead of Choate...

I know you read this all the time on CC, BUT it really is important to find a school that "fit" for you.

If you do decide to apply, let me know when so I can be on the look-out for you next year! :)

Milton has a master plan to increase the number of boarding students while decreasing the number of day students. That is why the acceptance rate for day students has gone down. There are also a few new dorms to house the increase in boarding.

How much of an increase are they talking about?

This is link to their master plan. I think they were at 60%day and 40% boarding and are moving to the reverse. I had heard that there was some friction between the day and boarding students but I do not know if that is true.
http://www.milton.edu/masterplan/index.aspa

I think I know what you're talking about, but i think that was a while ago. It used to be 40% board and 60% day and now it's 50% each. Shelley, that link doesn't work, so I am curious as to where you are getting your information.

I went to the Milton website and searched "Master Plan"
The first link is the one I think you are referring to. It is old (from 02-03). Just so you know. Unless this isn't the one you're talking about, Milton has already changed their percentages of boarding and day students.

the day student-boarder ratio was the #2 reason i didnt go to milton

What was the #1 reason? Just wondering.

because i looooved andover

That's cool. So Milton was your second choice? Just curious, but what were the others that you applied to?

Yeah... and what were you stats? (Grades, EC's, SSAT, etc.)

What other schools did you apply to and get accepted/rejected?

Do you attend Andover?

honestly, my public high school was my second choice (its very good, and i went to public school up until that point). i applied to milton as a day student, nobles (day school), and andover, and was lucky enough to get into all three. when all was said and done, andover was the only one that felt like a "good fit." it was andover or bust. this wasnt for any real reason other than the fact that my little 14-year-old heart fell in love with andover and didnt like the other two. plus i reeeeally wanted to board, it looked like so much fun! and it was. going to andover was the best choice i ever made.

In regards to MomofWildChild's comment, JK, just so you know, since you like to know everything there is to know about boarding schools. (I was the same way, no hard feelings)

SATURDAY CLASSES.

Andover = yes
Exeter = yes
Choate = yes
Hotchkiss = yes
Lawrenceville = yes
Groton = yes
Loomis Chaffee = yes
Middlesex = yes
St. Paul = yes

Milton = no
Deerfield = no

I think I got all of the ones that you were thinking of applying to. Maybe more...

oh, stats. i got all As in middle school, took voice lessons, did the school musicals (but didnt really get parts), dabbled in chorus, tutored french, and took up trumpet for the application year (haha i was not too good at that). i also played softball (poorly). i think i wrote good essays, but i was so nervous at my andover interview! it was my first one and the only one i cared about. SSATs: i think i was 96th percentile math, 86th percentile reading comprehention (i took it twice, was like 64th the first time), and somewhere in the 90s for verbal. i was a legacy at andover, but my dad didnt give much money and id like to think i could have gotten in on my own. who knows, though.

I feel the same about Milton. Hopefully I will enjoy it as much as you have for Andover. :)

also, andover only has like 6 saturday classes a year.
