I immigrated to CA in 8th grade, would writing about my struggle in learning english and having to help my parents by taking a job at the same time be a good topic? I know this is a very common topic but I plan on making it about what I learned through this experience since i improved my grades significantly from 10th to 11th grade. Also how I have grown over the years and now able to read/write 3 languages fluently (which i plan on using for special talents topic)
Any input is greatly appreciated!

Yes, it is common, but adcoms notice students who helped their families by working, translating, etc- and still get great grades, participate in ECs and make friends. Write it well. Watch out for making it sound like others’ essays. Would help if this inspired you to, in some way, help others now or aim for some career.

This is a great idea, but is used often! So, make sure you stand out, how has this 1 experience helped you in life? How have you bettered yourself as a person and how has this experience influenced your overall personality? If you are writing about learning English and helping your parents find a job, make sure there is flow to the essay; you don’t want 2 different ideas. Nice idea! Good luck!

Quick question: I can’t find the page to start my own thread. Can 1 of you just tell me where to click and how to proceed? Thanks.

awe: on the left toolbars, go to the forum you want to thread in- eg, “college admissions.” At the bottom of that page, you’ll see the “new thread” button.
