Is this a Likely Letter?

D received email:

Congratulations on your academic achievements thus far! The SAT score results you have submitted to Oberlin indicate that you are likely to succeed in our challenging academic environment. We are delighted that you are considering joining our community of lifelong learners, who are committed to their quests for knowledge and creative expression, and to their desire to contribute to the world around them.

You may already be familiar with Oberlin's history of academic and artistic excellence and commitment to social justice. Please note that while Oberlin's history is one of firsts and innovation, our students and alumni are not resting on their laurels. They are actively challenging convention, breaking boundaries, and pushing themselves to make a difference. Lucas Brown '09 is a perfect example of how our students routinely defy the status quo. He founded and designed the nationally recognized SEED House (Student Experiment in Ecological Design), majored in economics, and served as an environmental sustainability advocate. Lucas is currently pursuing an M. Phil. degree in economics at Oxford University as a Rhodes Scholar.

Your history of academic success and interest in Oberlin indicate that you too are committed to a quest for knowledge and a desire to make an impact in the world. As you consider your college choices, we hope that Oberlin's mission stands out. We look forward to hearing from you and welcome the opportunity to be of service as you proceed through the college selection process. If you have any questions, please do not hesitate to contact us at college.admissions@oberlin.edu or by calling our office at (800) 622-OBIE!

Sincerely,

NO!!! It is a mass mailing sent from the lists they purchase from Collegeboard!

Haha…I was just about to ask the same thing. It seems kind of suspicious hahaha.

@SDonCC - it’s not just a mass mailing from CollegeBoard, because they say thanks for applying.

oh, I misread it. Still, I wouldn’t call this a likely letter; it looks like they are encouraging the person to send in an application – it looks like they only submitted SAT scores.

I got this today as well. Did anyone who hadn’t submitted their app yet get it? I submitted mine about 3 weeks ago.

^ Same here. My application/supplement has been in for weeks, as have my SAT scores and everything else.

Don’t read too much into it. A few years back, there was a mom on this board who updated all the correspondence her daughter rec’d from the school, including a letter telling the daughter how great her essay was. My son rec’d none of the correspondence that her daughter rec’d, which made son feel a bit dismayed. Come spring time, son was accepted, and the daughter was waitlisted. Never try to read the tea leaves.

well, now we got this mailing too. application not submitted yet.

We sent this email to seniors who sent us SAT score results that were notably high. It’s meant to be an encouraging letter, because if you have high SAT scores you’re likely to be a good student we would want to admit. However, your high school record is much more important than your standardized test scores in the admissions process, so it’s more of a “likely if your grades are also great” letter.
