So I got an e-mail from an alumnus yesterday, and it reads thus:

Dear ***,

the Cornell Admissions Office gave me your name as someone who might have questions about the Cornell experience... (talking about his experience with Cornell)

If you would like to ask me any questions, please contact me...(contact info)

Is this some sort of a hint at an interview, or am I just supposed to ask my questions via e-mail? I applied to the College of Engineering w/ the College of Arts & Sciences as the second choices, so I don't think the interview is required for me. But has anyone received anything like this? I just want to know for sure how I am supposed to interpret/respond to this. Thanks!

Yeah, it is an interview email. I just got one as well.

I'm not sure, but does everyone get an interview email if Cornell has found an alumnus in your area?

I got the same email, but is it a formal, admissions-related interview?
Because my email says "This is an optional meeting and has no affect upon your application to Cornell. It is an opportunity for you to learn more about the University, the various colleges and to ask any questions that you may have."
So I'm not sure if it's just a time for me to ask any questions I might have and to learn more, or if it will carry weight on the admissions process.

I'm not really sure how to respond to my e-mail though, because he just says that if I have questions I can contact him. Should I propose to set a date for an interview? Is that what he wants? He didn't mention anywhere in the letter about meeting.

I don't think it has anything to do w/ it being a "supplement" to your application. From the email I got it, I felt that it was just another opportunity for us to get more information about Cornell from an alumnus and see if it was a good fit.
