I just received an email from a Cornell alumni, and I'm confused as to what it means. Basically, he wrote some times at which he'll be meeting undergraduate applicants to answer any questions they have about Cornell and included the locations, but is this an interview or what? Did anybody else receive this email?

Sounds like an interview offer or Cornell information session in your region.
It doesn’t mean anything. It’s just how alum interviewers in your region conduct interviews/information sessions I guess.

If you applied to Cornell, I would respond to the email and make an appointment to meet. You can ask for more details in the email so you are prepared.

I had an “interview” for Cornell this year, but it was a little different from the interviews I had for other schools that are more official about the process. My interviewer wasn’t an undergrad alum, I think she was just somehow associated with admissions, and the interview was mostly me asking questions about Cornell, as opposed to her asking me questions. It was very informal but informative in case I end up going there!

That’s not true, I had an interview with a Cornell grad back in December and I’m a prospective engineer. I believe Cornell only requires a formal interview for the hotel school. These interviews are far from that and they are offered to as much of the applicants as they can. What determines whether you get one or not depends on two things: the number of CAAN members and the number of applicants are in your area.

You all were right! I just had my interview this afternoon, and it lasted about 60-70 minutes. My interviewer was incredibly nice, and I walked out of the interview feeling like I learned 1000x more information about Cornell than I would have learned via Google or College Confidential threads (no offense ). If you are contacted by an alumnus, I highly recommend you take advantage of the opportunity.

I’ve heard that for most colleges, the interviewer doesn’t know anything about the student besides contact information, the student’s major, etc. before meeting him/her; however, I have also heard that interviewers are told to interview students if they are being considered as an applicant or things of the sort. Does anybody know any more information about this?

Cornell’s really informal with its interviews, mine was mostly a conversation about Cornell and my interviewer’s experience there - it was the most chill interview I’ve ever had

I got a similiar email. I guess the informal interviews are given to people who applied to cornell and has an alumni near the area you live in. The formal interviews will be offered to people who applied to hotel and one other school that requires it.
