Is this really true?

I've heard from a lot of people that Duke is "no fun." I know a kid that had a full-ride to Duke, but would rather to go UNC-CH because it is more fun. I've heard descriptions such as "No one is having fun and playing frisbee or hanging out, everyone is walking around by themselves looking at the ground."

How accurate is this description, because I've been wanting to go to Duke since I was young, but I don't want to go to a school with a lame campus life.

If you consider tenting at K-ville no campus life, then I don’t know what your definition of “fun” is (sarcasm). Also Duke has a high number people who join frats and soros, so I would think there are a lot of parties.

Whoever told you that is either blind, stupid, or some combination of the two. I visited Duke for 3 days to make my decision, but within 5 minutes on campus, I saw the exact opposite of what you’re describing.

Looks like you were talking to a typical Tarhole, who fits nicely into that second category.

Wrong. Unless you call having successful athletic programs “lame”, which wouldn’t be too surprising coming from a Dookie.

I guess I’ll have to go take a campus tour to see for myself

hehe i’ll have to agree with hookem on this one :)

when school is in session and not before noon on a weekend!

Wow…this is the most blatantly “wrong” statement I’ve heard in a long, long time. Aside from the partying (Duke’s known to have one of the biggest party scenes of any top school, though you can certainly avoid it if you wish), there’s a ton of athletic events to go to on the weekends (all free for students), and other random things to do both in Durham and Chapel Hill. I may have complaints about various aspects of Duke, but a lack of “fun” is definitely not one of those.

Senator Noodles, what types of other complaints?

Nothing very serious or even unique to Duke. They’re mostly minor complaints/annoyances which anyone at any school would have. For example, while there’s a wide variety of food on campus, it can get old fast. Or how West campus living works (with SLGs and frats automatically getting space on West). Or sometimes even the bus system where the buses run constantly until like 7 pm but after that you have to (gasp!) wait for one because they run every ten minutes. I mean, they’re all just little things that everyone gets used to. As far as the rest of Duke life goes, I’m really happy.

This is the biggest lie in the world.

First of all, plenty of pickup frisbee games, etc, on the quad on a nice fall/spring afternoon! There are even some tightrope walkers…

Second of all, depending on your definition of “fun,” tailgate, LDOC, and any typical weekend will not let you down.

Take an overnight visit to campus if it really concerns you. Now that I’ve recently graduated, I want nothing more than to go back because I literally had the GREATEST 4 years of my life (and of course the most fun!)

My 2nd cousin who was class of 89 or something and my ex neighbor who graduated 2 years ago told me Duke is amazing and described it as a “Ivy-State/party hybrid”

Wow, no fun? Please stay for a week, and you’ll see fun.

Good to hear some first hand experience!

As an alum and a parent (both kids got in but did not go), I must say the problem is the opposite. Duke has too much opportunity for distraction. But the same can be said about other schools too, so it is not that much of a knock. But the lack of opportunity for fun is the least of Duke’s problems.

I’m back home from my first year at Duke. It’s been a month and a half. I still have two more months of boredom ahead of me. Can I go back now?

HTH
