Wake up early. Go to class to learn about things I couldn’t care less about. Eat garbage food at lunch with people I can’t stand to be around. Go back to my room to nap since I didn’t get enough sleep the night before. Open my laptop and see that I have to do 200 pages of reading and write an essay due tomorrow. I skim the book and write a horrible essay that will barely get a passing grade because why? Because I DON’T CARE ABOUT ANY OF THIS STUFF. Then why are you spending all your parents money to go to college? Because if I don’t then I won’t be able to G E T A J O B. A job where I will be miserable for the rest of my life. A job where I will be putting in countless hours to pay the bills to only stay alive and make money. Gotta love life, huh? We don’t even know why we are here on earth yet we spend so much of our time miserable doing “work”, and learning pointless things at school. If this is really what life has to offer, than man, it really does stink.
That’s not my life, and it’s not all life has to offer.
I have a job I love, after 30 years at it. (I’m a high school math teacher.) I’m married to a wonderful (most of the time) guy and have 3 great (most of the time) kids. My mom is still kicking-- and vacationing, and hosting parties-- at 87 and all 4 of my siblings live within 45 minutes. We have enough money for a vacation now and then; we’ll be returning to Disney World in 90-something days.
My strong suggestion to you is that you stop by the mental health center on campus today. No one deserves to be as unhappy as you appear to be. If you felt a lump I would suggest having a physical. Since you appear to be having a depression issue, I’m suggesting that you speak to a mental health professional.
Please stop in today and get back to us about how it went.
@ArthurJ , wow! I agree with the above comment to stop by the counseling center. If you are a freshman in college and taking gen Eds I can understand that you are bored and want to be taking classes in something that would interest you more. Do you have anything you are passionate about? Any hobbies or any idea what kind of job you might want to have in the future that would make you happy to be alive and kicking every day? Sports you like? There are tons of adults out in the world today who will get up and go to a job that they love! Maybe it would help to talk with someone who can help you find your interests so you can look forward to a rewarding job in the future. I really hope you find your happiness. God bless!
Right now you are suffering. A negative, all or nothing mindset is going to continue you on this road of suffering. Talk to your parents about how you feel so you can work with them on a decision process. Go to the counseling center and request mental health services. Learning to feel more positively about life will be hard work, but it is totally doable with hard work. You probably can’t do it alone. Life can have some dull and pointless moments, but it certainly doesn’t have to be as you describe.
