Is this schedule doable? (18 units)

I know 18 units seems excessive, but currently I'm in L&S and I need to transfer into CoE in this year. They typically reject applicants because they do not have enough units to judge them effectively. I'm applying for some engineering scholarships next year, so I'm banking on getting in by sophomore year...

Schedule:

Physics 7A
Math 1A
Eng 7
Film Studies RB
E 98
misc seminar class

I mapped out my schedule and with discussions and labs added ontop of the lectures I have to attend, I'm basically going to be running from class to class all day from 8-6.

Two of my classes are P/F (E98 and seminar class), so really it's only 16 units. I've already taken phys7A and math 1A in high school, but I need a refresh my memory.

Should I cut back on the classes to make it easier? Maybe push back film studies to next semester?

Thanks.

I would push the film studies back. 18 units with 6 classes is a ton for any semester, let alone your first. On top of that, Math 1A and Physics 7 are generally harder than people think, even if you took AP.

Yea, it looks pretty difficult. Can you handle the pressure? I’d say drop film studies.

^ ■■■■ wesley chang

ur a freshman… don’t take that much. ><

As freshman, that does sound like too much. Try it if you want to, but drop one if you find yourself under too much pressure.

Try it out.

Drop a class by the deadline if you can’t handle the courseload.

don’t take too many units… it’ll hurt your gpa if you don’t do well in all of them…

yeah, I’ll prob take out film studies and leave it for next semester to make it only 14 units.

The CoE guide expects students to take 15-16 units each semester though (including fall freshman year)?

Oh and here are the profs that I’m getting:

Math 1A- Borcherds
Physics 7A - Ramesh
E 7- Packard
Film Studies - Rust

tough schedule

Honestly, if you’ve taken 16 units (letter grade) before and done well, this should be quite easy. The only tough class in there is Physics 7A and maybe Engg 7.

You’ll be OK, just study regularly and work lots of practice problems. I’d take off the film, since the COE probably won’t care that you took it enough for it to be a positive, and it leaves time to focus on the rest. A 16 unit schedule with solid classes that the COE would expect you to take anyway is better.

Thanks for the advice everyone. I’m going to hold off taking film studies until later, maybe in the summer or something next year. That way I can focus on the important classes.

I think E 7 is going to be difficult for me because I have no programming experience whatsoever…

Shouldn’t be bad. I think CS 61A might be a little hard to get used to at the beginning if you go in with zero experience, but that also is very doable. In fact, if you can take 61A, I might recommend it in place of this E7.

^ Yeah, I was thinking about that too since I might apply to EECS.
