is this schedule doable?

is this schedule doable? my major is mcd biology.... so i know for sure i have to take core, math and chem. psych1 is one of the GE's i chose. if i don't take psych1 then i only have 13 units and that seems too less since fulltime is 12 units. but if i take psych1 then i will have 18units. just wondering if anyone had/has a similar schedule to this. how heavy is the course load with 4 classes?

I’m an entering student, and pretty much everyone has told me to keep it at 3 classes my first quarter. I assume you’re already in all these classes? If I were doing bio, I would drop psych for now (but in reality I’m a psych major and I’m in that class, so I’m not going anywhere, haha). Chances are you’ll come across a class that you need that is more than 5 units, so you’ll make up for lost time there. Or you’ll feel better when you’ve gotten the hang of the system and you can handle another class. I’m not saying you can’t handle it now, I’m just saying what everyone else has been telling me: take it easy your first quarter. But really, it’s up to you. Think about a few things. How’s your schedule set up? Do you have classes back-to-back? In terms of distance, how far apart are these classes? Can you fill that GE requirement some other quarter? Just try to consider all the factors, and make the best choice for yourself. (:

That’s going to be a lot of work for your first quarter, I definitely do not recommend it, and the advisers likely will not allow you to take that many credits.

19 is the maximum number of credits you can take your very first quarter, and 12 is the minimum (at any time) to be considered a full time student for financial aid and insurance purposes. So no matter if you choose to keep psych or drop it, you’re in the safe zone. But still, 4 classes is a lot to tackle your first quarter. Just think about if it’s really plausible right now.

kewkiekid: It’s less than 19 units. The advisers can advise against the schedule, but they cannot prevent that schedule because it is still within the unit limits for a first quarter.

Jw0406: While yes, it is advised to take no more than 15 units (roughly three classes on average) your first quarter, there is nothing wrong with taking more if you feel you can handle it. It’s just a matter of prioritizing your time correctly and understanding you cannot slack. I personally find the heavier schedules crucial to my success. The lighter my quarters, the harder I have to work. Free time is not my friend and never has been. If you are a person like this, then you will thrive on a schedule like the one you have proposed.

Only you can know what you can handle. Your only outside imposed limits are the minimum units required for full-time and the maximum units you’re allowed to enroll in. My personal opinion is that 18 units of lower division classes is not impossible if one is motivated enough.

Im in a similar boat OP. I have Chem 1P, Psych Intro, and I have Psych 80A in my cart, but possibly switching it out with my core course. While I was at first wary of the 13 credits, I figured since it is first quarter, I might as well enjoy it and get more suited to the UC environment rather than go in full force. I already know that when need be, I’ll be able to take any other classes I need.

thanks for everyone advice! i’ll think about it, still leaning on taking 4 classes… is it possible to go to psych1 for the first few days and then drop if i cannot handle it?

Absolutely. You have a few weeks where you can drop/ass classes with no consequences.

I’m taking 18 units for my first quarter at UCSC.

What I did was go on ratemyprofessors.com and see what the work load consisted of. The only thing I dread are the readings for Philosophy class… Hahaha.
