Is this schedule too hard?

CHEM C 117 + 127 (lab) 5cr.
BIOL 112 3 cr.
BUS K 201 3cr.
HISP S 280 3 cr.

This was mine and my advisors plan for next semester, however a bunch of people are telling me this is a difficult combination of classes. They add up to 14 credit hours, what do you think? Is this going to be difficult to do?

Yes, it’s difficult. L112 is a pretty standard weed out class for bio majors, depending on who you get. C117 and 127 also take up a TON of time–but if you have a solid chem background, they aren’t that hard (just time consuming)

how about k201??

My daughter is currently in K201 and as she gets deeper into the semester this course can be challenging and time consuming. She is in business so she needs to take this and it is probably one of her tougher courses. What are you looking to major in? If you have other challenging courses and are not pursuing business there may be some better options.

If you’re not LAMP or trying to get into Kelley, I wouldn’t take K201. Especially if you’re aiming for med school

Given that you posted your high school stats were “a 2.52 and a 28 ACT” back in June, I think that schedule is a stretch for you unless all you liked in high school was Chem and Bio and you were president of the computer club.

From what I understand from people taking K201 right now (my son), it’s not hard if you already know a little Excel and Access and have even done some coding, but the time commitment is the issue. As others have stated, college-level science courses are time killers as well, and require a level of detail not always present in high school.

Your advisor must really believe in you, or was an English major and never took science and tech classes.

I am trying to get into LAMP so my advisor recommend I take it since its a freshman class and I could get it out of the way. I have 18 credits coming from high school and already have my gen eds done. Biology is my major.
Thaumaturge, my weighted gpa that I accepted with is a 3.0. I’m taking 12 credit hours now and my lowest grade is 100% so I’ve definitely stepped it up since my freshman year of high school.

Are you aiming for med school? Or what are your current post-college thoughts?

slipperyslide

No slight intended. It’s great that you’ve improved so much since starting high school. I still think the proposed schedule is tough unless the 12 hours you’re taking now are time consuming as well, but you know your own capabilities. Hopefully you still have the high averages after the midterms.

No, not med school; too long and too expensive. Maybe a PA school but that’s not until I’m 25 or something. Should I not do LAMP if this is the case?

I’d still recommend keeping a high GPA. LAMP is a great program if you’re interested in going into a business/life science type program–think big pharma marketing/sales, etc.

But for example, here are the admissions ranges at Duke’s #1 USNews ranked PA program:
"The ranges of academic and experiential qualifications for the middle 50 percent of accepted applicants for Fall 2014 were as follows:

Overall GPA: 3.3 – 3.7
Natural science GPA: 3.1 – 3.7
Total natural science hours: 42 – 73
GRE General Test scores:
Verbal: 153 – 161
Quantitative: 152 – 158
Analytical Writing: 4.0 – 4.5
Months of full-time patient care experience: 15 – 38"

Bio 112 is NOT a weed out class. However, I would only take Bio OR Chemistry and substitute possibly English or take an easy class. Since it’s your first semester, I’d suggest Bio as it’s not as complicated but it does require work.

LAMP is a competitive program. The career goals that you specify in your application essay should sound ambitious in order to compete with other applicants. Physician’s assistant might not sound very good compared to other professions one can go into with liberal arts degrees. Many accepted students are also in Hutton honors.

Also, do not underestimate the difficulty of maintaining a 3.3 gpa in COAS. Not very tough to do in Kelley, but can be very tough for many liberal arts major areas.

Also, K201 is not even required for the LAMP degree. CSCI A110 will substitute for K201, and is an easy A for just about anybody who puts in the time, and not nearly as challenging as K201, and the students who take CSCI A110 are not nearly as motivated. You should take the easier grading options when there are choices, so that you can protect your gpa. The LAMP seminars grade easily and can help boost your overall gpa, but you have to get accepted into LAMP to take those. Here are the course requirements.

bthomp I didn’t even know that class was an option! That looks like the best decision for me in order to keep my GPA up and still get the credit done. Thanks so much. What professions would you consider competitive when applying for LAMP. Being a PA is more of a long term goal, it wouldn’t happen until I have another job at least 4 or 5 years before. So I just want to know my options of what I could do right out of college with a Bio BS and maybe a Certificate in Business Management
