by the way the only way i am doing english is because I just wanna be on the safe side when applying to med schools. i think my 770 on sat writing should get me out W131, right?
You are exempt from W131. I don’t know anything about how to get into med school though. Sorry.
Just use http://gradedistribution.registrar.indiana.edu/ and ratemyprofessors.com when planning your schedule.
Hi, I’m also pre-med. You are exempt from W131. I didn’t take the class because I was exempt due to SAT and ACT scores and I took a dual-credit class in HS that counted for the requirement. Depending on where you want to go to med school it may not hurt to take it though. I know some schools like Johns Hopkins wants you to have taken 2 writing intensive courses.
I would drop bio-l111. You only need to take L112, L211, and L113 for the premedical requirement for biology. You can look here to see other premedical coursework needed for at least the IUB school of medicine: http://hpplc.indiana.edu/medicine/med-cw.shtml. If you really want the credit for L111 if you didn’t get a 5 on the AP Bio exam then take the bio test offered during NSO. I retook L112 last fall (got the credit from the AP exam) because some med schools allow you to use the AP credit but then want you to take an upper level bio class.
I think your schedule is good for an incoming freshman, you don’t want to take too many classes or credit hours because you want to get used to college.
What is so bad about BioL111? thanks bro lol
I got accepted as biochem major btw so i probably don’t need that class, i just want to get a full scope of biology for the MCAT
I don’t think they require it for the MCAT because it covers evolution and plant biology while L112 talks about things like the circulatory, respiratory, and endocrine system. I personally like bio less than I like chemistry and physics which is why I had no interest in taking L111.
@tola2015 would adding S117 in lieu of c117 make this schedule really hard? also, i am considering taking writing courses just to be safe when applying to med school. what is w131 like?
@TheInstitute It wouldn’t make your schedule overally hard, if you are willing to put in the work. I didn’t have to take w131, I was exempt due to my ACT and SAT scores and I took a dual-credit class in HS that counted for the requirement. I don’t know much about it. All I know is that my friends who have taken it said it was really hard to get an A in.
My daughter maxed out her verbal SAT and got out of W131 as well, but we have been told the medical school review adcoms kinda want to see an advanced writing class of some kind if the applicant did not take W131. Supposedly there’s W231 or any type of technical / scientific writing.
She also qualified for Honors Calc I (S211) based on the online placement test but asked the difference between S211 and M211 and was told S211 is more proofs, which I would think aren’t critical for premeds.
Many decades ago my wife took W131 and it was not easy. But we’re not native speakers so… I have heard W131 is a lot of work, and if you’re taking Chem 117 and Calc, that’s like 11 credit hours so…
@turbo93 i guess icould take w131 my second semester so im more acclimated to college environment. i want my schedule to be tough but i also want to be able to get a 4.0 my first sem. S211 uses the same textbook as M211, so i think it’s a good class to take. also look at grade distributions for honors classes vs regular classes. it’s truly eye opening. i think there is a leniency of some sort, and i wouldnt say there is a huge difference in aptitude for math between regular calc I and honors calc I students.
Well, any Honors course is self selecting so you’re likely to have better grades overall… Maybe there’s a better curve in Honors
