Is this the stupidest idea ever?

To boost my GPA, I was thinking about taking Calc 161Q even though I already got a 5 on AP Calc BC + 5 on AB sub-score. Would this have any benefit...if I want a Math major/minor or a Science major/minor?

You won’t be the only student in MTH 161 who’s retaking the course to cushion their GPA. Lots of kids do it.

The down side of retaking the class instead of taking the advanced standing from your AP is that it increases the number of courses you’ll need to complete to fulfill a math major/minor–which if you double or triple major (as you’ve mentioned doing in other threads) will make it more difficult to squeeze all your coursework into 4 years.

Thanks for the response. Well, after much reflection and consideration, I’ve decided to take the credit I get for AP Calc BC. I’m going to take credit for 161 & 162 and take my chance at 165, Linear Algebra w/ Differential Equations. Wish me luck; I’ll probably need it (and so will my depressed GPA).

Actually you need to take MTH 164 (multidimensional calc) before you take MTH 165 (linear algebra).

Check the sequence of required classes here:

[UR Math: Majors](http://www.math.rochester.edu/undergraduate/degrees/majors.html)

MTH 164 is a pre-req for MTH 165,

BTW, both my daughters have a math major and both said Calc 3 was a whole lot easier than Calc 2. (Matrices are fun!)

I think you are mistaken. The course catalog says, verbatem, the prerequisites for 165 are “MTH 143, 162, or MTH 172Q. NOTE: MTH 164 is not a prerequisite for MTH 165. (Fall and Spring)” So I guess 162 opens the gateway to 163, 164, and 165. Thank god, because I never want to take 164, MultiCalc. Linear & Discrete are fine by me for freshman year.

I see what you’re getting at. Although you don’t have to take 164 before 165, you inevitably have to take both for a Math Major. Well… since yesterday, I’m leaning on a Math Minor, as all you need are 7 courses, which makes 164 only optional.

Ok, so if you’re not going major in math, then you don’t absolutely have to have 164.

But note that 150 is more theory-oriented and required for all CS majors; whereas 164 is more interested in problem-solving approaches and is designed for science, engineering and econ majors.

Also the dept recommends that:

But in any case, you’ll need to consult with the math dept advisor before registering.
