I’m a high school senior applying to multiple colleges, including Brown, UPenn, Emory, and a couple state schools.
I live in a town that is 95% Roman Catholic and 99% Christian, but I grew up in a family that is atheist with Islamic/Lutheran roots. I want to talk about how growing up this way made me feel isolated from my peers, especially in context to one of my favorite poems, “Litany of the Green Lion” by d.a. levy. I don’t plan on devaluing Christianity or religion–the opposite, actually. I want to talk about how even though I’m not directly involved in religion, I still yearn for the community that churches/mosques/etc. share with their members and that I watched my peers actively participate in.
However, I’m worried this is a little abstract–there is a central anecdote surrounding the whole essay, as well as the poem. I just don’t want to sound like some dudeist/hippie guy from the Big Lebowski.
Any advice on this is so so so appreciated!
If someone (preferably a parent/alum, but if not that’s still cool) could PM and read my essay, I would also be immensely grateful.
