Is this too heavy of a courseload???? I think so!!

My school has a set program, so you don't get to choose your classes, nor do you get to choose which session you have (e.g. the times). I am commuting, so I basically have to hang out at the campus, library, etc. in the big gaps i have between classes. I have:

Monday: a 4-hour block of time I have to spend at the college, including a 2 hour psych and 1 hour writing course, plus 1 hour in between

Tuesday: a 9-hour block including 3 hours of chemistry lecture, 3 hours of chemistry lab, 1 hour of calculus, and 1 hour of biology.... remember, I didn't choose this. They assigned all this, which I think is a ridiculous amount of science work.

Wednesday: a 6-hour block of calculus, 2 hours off, chemistry, 1 hour off, biology

Thursday: another 9-hour day consisting of 3 hours of biology lab, 1 hour of biology class, 2 hour break, calculus, break, and chemistry

Friday: 5 hour block, including writing, psych, break, calculus

Does that seem like a lot or is it just me? I mean, NINE hours!!!

I've had a 14 hour day before. If this sounds bad to you, then it probably is and you should change it. Remember, it doesn't matter what we think.. it is about comfort.. and if you are unhappy or stressed too much you aren't going to do well.

Where in the world do you go where they set your schedule and everything?

yale (10char)

Yeah, I was accepted to yale but found out they do my scheduling... so obviously I rejected them.

Yale seriously does this? To everybody?

I'd be happy to go to Yale (I wouldn't complain, but everybody has their breaking points), but you are right.

That load seems too much to handle. Could you talk to your academic advisor about changing your classes and schedule?

At first glance your schedule looked really bad, but then I noticed you have breaks thrown in there.

It's not that bad. Some days are obviously going to be a ***** to get through, but as long as you don't have a short attention span and you have the (academic) endurance, you'll get through.

Wait...Yale doesn't let you pick your classes??? ***, I never heard that.

no;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;

If their students couldn't handle this, the school wouldn't expect them to.

A full-time load at college is meant to be about equivalent to a full-time job, and if you can be disciplined enough to get everything done at school, that's about what you'll be doing -- a 9-hour day with a half hour for lunch in the middle is not at all unreasonable for a job.

Use your breaks wisely. If you really need downtime, take it. You probably will need some downtime on Tuesdays and you definitely will on Thursdays. If there are extracurriculars or social events that you care about, make sure you do them -- and you may just want to hang out and meet people and socialize some days after you're done. But those all need to be conscious choices: you should be studying unless you are specifically choosing to do something else, and if you're not getting the studying done you need to rethink your choices.

It's really not that bad of a schedule.

Psychology
Chem and Chem Lab
Bio
College Writing
Calculus

Typical schedule.

It doesn't look that bad. My school schedules courses for me, and I see schedules very similar to this.

Stop complaining, because you commute and can't leave campus, you have to option to spend that time doing school work in the library, working out or something similar to that, rather than going back to the dorms and sleeping, like most students do.

Wow, I'm so glad I don't go to Yale. I would hate to have my classes chosen for me! I got enough of that in high school!

But, your schedule doesn't look too bad in terms of workload (for an ivy league school). Yes it would have been much better if you could have looked at the classes offered and scheduled your own times, but sometimes you just have to deal. I will also commute and have 6-7 hour blocks... you just need to learn to study, eat or do something else during those breaks and schedule the rest of your life around classes.

Do you have time for lunch or anything on Tuesday? Doesn't look like it...

I imagine they know what they are doing and thats why they do it. You can't always have your dream schedule.

I know this is old… but doesn’t this thread call into question the legitimacy of the actual clam fart mistake?

a. All Yale freshmen have to live on campus
b. Yale does not make you take certain courses, only general eds (at least I think)

@slights32‌ - Is it possible that Yale changed their policy since 2008? I know a lot of big schools like Boston University require Freshman students to live on campus but there are certain exemptions available like 50 mile radius/family obligations/health reasons, etc.

@preamble1776 Nope, this policy has been in place for awhile. I’m not sure exactly how long, but there was a case in 1997 where five Orthodox Jewish students did not want to live in the residential colleges due to religious reasons. The case went all the way to the Supreme Court where the students lost.

You can read more about it in these articles:

c’mon guys this is kinda interesting… clamfart probably didn’t happen… or the OP probably didn’t actually get in to Yale.
