Hello all,
I am currently a Junior at Purdue and am majoring in civil engineering. I am currently on track to graduate in the spring of 2014, or in four years since I started school. The thing is that I am from Colorado and am not interested in the Greek life that is so popular at Purdue. I miss skiing and playing hockey and being in the great outdoors like I was my whole childhood, instead of just going for runs or to the gym for exercise. Quite frankly, the more time I spend here the more and more I grow to distain it. I have some close friends here, but a pretty limited social group. Because of this I am thinking about transferring to CU Boulder or Colorado State, where I know people and am near the things that I like to do. Would you say it is worth transferring at this point, or should I just tough it out and finish here. I have the GPA to get in to either of those schools, so the question is whether it would be worth is to go to school for five years at one of those schools or finish in four years here at Purdue when I would be much happier in Colorado. Thanks for any opinions

Why did you go to Purdue in the first place? Do they negatives outweigh the positives, I would suggest transferring. However, keep in mind that being in a different place made you have this perspective on Colorado. Maybe staying at a different place will give you even more perspectives on live in the coming years…
Besides, I bet when you are in Colorado you are going to miss things from Purdue too;)

You may lose some time if you transfer and, honestly, Purdue is an excellent engineering school. Look at it from the perspective that you are only there for 1.5 more years and then you can look for a job in the location of your choice. The degree from Purdue will open some doors and you won’t ever have to go back there if you choose.

Sit down and run the numbers. The difference between in-state cost at Boulder and out-of-state cost at Purdue could mean that that extra year is free.

If you are completely miserable, consider taking a leave of absence for second semester, and just do something else. Talk with the career center at Purdue, and see if they can help you find an internship or coop for a semester or longer.

Hey,

I’m in sort of the same boat- you can PM me if you want.

I would say, though, that it’s not worth it to transfer as an upper year. We can discuss on inbox though.

Sorry MosheA, don’t have enough account activity to PM.

After talking with the admissions offices at CU Boulder and CSU, it sounds like not many core engineering courses would transfer so it would set me back pretty substantially. This is not only in time but in hours and hours of hard work. So after thinking about it, xraymancs is right, this will be a very good degree and its only 1.5 more years.

I decided to get on board as a committee chair with the Living Building Challenge here at Purdue which will keep me busy and looks excellent on a resume for a Civil Engineer who is specializing in green buildings. I figure while I’m here I will just enhance my degree while keeping busy and come out of it that much better. (And get a job wherever I want) It will be a good way to meet more people as well.

If I were miserable to the point I didn’t think I could stay here I would be on my home.

Thanks for all of your inputs, it was nice to hear different opinions.

MocheA, if you can figure out how to PM I would still be willing to talk.
