Growing up in Michigan (and a huge Wolverines fan) I've always had my sights set on going to UM. However, now that I'm researching colleges and realize that Michigan's undergrad enrollment is monstrous I was just wondering if that affected and past or current students. Do you ever feel like a number? I ask because other schools I'm considering, like Notre Dame, have much smaller enrollments.

Michigan is not too big, but it is large and requires some getting used to. And Notre Dame may be smaller, but it is not exactly a LAC. Notre Dame has 8,000 undergrads. If you feel like a number at Michigan, chances are, you will also feel like a number at any school with more than 6,000 undergrads.

I don't know, I still think there is a big difference between 8000 and 23000(can't remember the actual number so that is a guess)

Trust me, there is no difference between 8,000 and 25,000. Big is big. You aren't going to be known by name at Notre Dame and most faces you see will be strangers in a crowd.

If you're a huge Wolverines fan, how can you even consider going to ND?!?!? Jokes aside, you make the campus as big or as small as you want to. The more involved you are in different student organizations, the wider your circle of friends is. Rarely do I walk to class without seeing someone I know from another class, marching band, my hall, etc. It's also incredible how so many people you meet are somehow friends of a friend; it really helps to make the campus seem smaller. The other 99% of the student body goes about their business in the background of your life like movie extras; they add to the "college atmosphere," but, at least for me, don't overwhelm in the slightest.

lol I know, I've been called a traitor many times. But ND is a great school and close to home, so I have to consider it. And, unless for some reason I go there, I will continue to hate them when football season starts back up. (and I wouldn't even consider MSU or OSU)

Anyway, thanks for the help. Its good to know that it doesn't really affect life at UofM.

As my friend said, you only feel like a number when you're looking for you seat in the Big House Saturday morning.

i agree with supermurgatroyd, my sister attends U of M and she has gotten very involved in some student groups, which has widened his circle of friends. While their may be an enormous amount of students, if you make an effort to get involved you will not be known as just a number, at least in your group.
