IS UMICH a diverse and friendly atmosphere?

Students for the "new civil rights movement - by any means necessary"

They go and protest everything that might ban affirmative action etc, and they're really obnoxious about it.
EG: airhorns and megaphones in peoples' ears as they tried to sign the petition to ban affirmative action in Michigan, 100 Airhorns (one in each hand) and music so that nobody could hear when Ward Connerly came to give a speech etc. They robbed a diner/store (operated by a blind man no less) while protesting the MCRI getting certified to be on the 2006 Michigan ballot in lansing. They appear on the FBI's terrorist watch list. I could go on and on.

I mean at least half of the students here agree with their politics, but their tactics are just off the wall (everything and everyones's a racist- shouting down people - being obnoxious to pettition gatherers etc - appeal court every decision that goes toward the pettition gatherers in an attempt to delay the pettition drive out of relevency - charge that everyone behind it is an evil racist - claim that all of the signatures gathered [and they gathered like 200,000 more than needed to be on Michigan ballot] were aquired through lying to the voters by the petition gatherers).

They have a lot of money from the MSA and a lot of money from a well-to-do buisinessman who is an ardent beleiver in socialism and total equality (the Berkeley chapter of bamn, for example is more about immigrants' rights)...so they have enough cash to never really go away. They do things like bus inner-city detroit kids in every year to get up on a microphone and say how awful they have it and why they deserve to go to school here.

www.mcri2004.com <--petition to ban AA in Michigan

That's funny. hehe I myself am a socialist, but I agree that many people take these things to the extreme. And even as a socialist, I am not a huge supporter of AA or of immigrant rights, although both have their compeling reasons and benefits.

By the way, Michigan was like that during my day too. That's what university students do...they take things to the extreme. It is annoying and ineffective I grant you, but it is also part of growing up for many.

here you go - I found this modestly amusing. I took the liberty of highlighting some key terms for the class ;)
