I am applying to University of Rochester for fall of 2020 as an early decisions international applicant. I have 1410 on SAT (630RW and 780M).
I completed CAIE Alevels with 4 A* in 4 Alevel courses (Computer Science, Mathematics, Physics and Chemistry) and 1 b in a AS Level Course (English General Paper).
I worked as the president of my high school’s Science and IT club and trained the members on Java language. I have been involved in organizing my high school’s exhibitions and have been a participant myself in some of them. I worked on a prototype of blind navigation stick and presented it during one of the highschool’s exhibition to be selected as an representative in an interschool Sci fair. Also, I presented a poster related to machine learning and its feasibility on weather studies.
I was also selected to represent the institution in a institution level math olympiad.
However, I am a student who requires high need based financial aid, my parents can only fund around $5500 and I can pay $600 from the funds collected in my name. So I wanted to ask how is my chance at University of Rochester as an early decision applicant for fall of 2020 and is the institution a reach for me?
If anyone has any idea on my chances of getting into University of Rochester please do leave a reply. I am stressing alot and your replies would be greatly appreciated. Thank you!!
Your grades and EC’s look good. Your SAT score is on the low side for U of R. Being an international applicant who needs a large amount of financial aid will also count against you. On the other hand, U of R accepts and enrolls a lot of international students. Bottom line, Rochester will be a reach for you, but admission is not outside the realm of possibilities. All you can do is apply and hope for the best.
I just finished with my application process. I really hope for the best, it has been on my university list’s top spot for a long time. I was really worried because of my SAT score but expected my grades in CAIE GCE A-levels to compensate for it. But, seems like that is not the case. And I am really glad that you replied, it does mean a lot for me (someone who stresses out a lot).
-Due to limited resources, only a small number of international applicants will qualify for need-based financial aid from the University.
-Applicants unable to secure the needed funding to cover the cost of attendance either through private funds or sponsorship cannot be admitted to the University.
The school does offer merit aid but I’m not sure you’d qualify as your English SATs are on the low side for the school.
All you can do is put in the strongest application possible. Be sure you have other options in the US and in your home country.
