I get that feeling. Is this true?

No. Some students do, but most stay on campus. It really depends on the individual student and family. We have commuters, but most people live in the U District or on campus. There are plenty of ways to get involved… I wouldn’t call UW a suitcase school at all. I go on campus on the weekends sometimes and there’s life and activity going around on campus. :)

I’ve never heard that term before. But yeah, it’s a commuter campus. Most people don’t live on campus. The dorms don’t have capacity. Lots of the UW’s housing stuff is actually in the next neighborhood away (quick bus ride) but mass transit is so easy that it’s not really that big of an issue. The UW is in a metropolitan part of town, so there’s plenty of places that are nearby that you can walk to campus or bus quickly.

These statistics are from the Dept. of Education:

Number of Students 32688
Number of Part-Time Students 6987
Number of Graduate Students 7750
Dorm Capacity 5895

So, while I still don’t understand the term “suitcase school” and wouldn’t use it, since the enrollment exceeds the dorm capacity by over 26,000, it is definitely a commuter campus.

What XaviFM says is true.

My idea of “commuter” is bussing/driving at least 30 minutes though… and most students live in U District or Northgate; definitely less time than that. I personally bus an hour to an hour and a half each way… so my perspective is probably different =P

Thanks for your reply. now here’s another question. i’m a junior, hoping to go to UW as OOS. I know housing is not guaranteed. I also understand it is a first come, first serve basis. Do I apply for housing right after I’ve been accepted? When do I apply for housing anyways?

I have the same question. Also, udub can you check your inbox? I PMed you

In traffic almost everywhere is 30 minutes away. I live near Northgate (roughly 55 blocks from UW) and my bus ride is 40 minutes, although I do have a transfer.
