Is UW good for Job Perspectives?

Hey guys how hard is it for International Students to get Jobs after graduating? What are the chances that I would get a working visa sponsored by a company before my Student Visa Expires? What is the Job Recruitment %age for an International Student at UW?
Just wanted to know because I don't want to come back to India after spending thousands of dollars. I am not even getting a scholarship :/

What do you plan on studying?

@speedsolver- i will be majoring in computer science!

have you been given a direct admission on computer science major

@blx347 Nope. Its showing as pre-science in college of arts and sciences

Then you should think about it as I was also admitted in Washington but I dropped the idea of going there as it is a very competitive major and not all the students get into CS after they join the university.

@blx347 Oh. Is it so? What do they look for in the student’s record before giving him the major? Is it just based on GPA?

After you join the university…YES.

Actually, they look at GPA and personal statements.

On the other hand, if you plan on just being a software engineer or a similar role, you can major in one of the similar majors (INFO, HCDE, ACMS), take the non-majors CSE courses, and still succeed as a software engineer. Plenty of my non-CSE friends go to Microsoft, Google, Amazon, Facebook, startups, etc… It really depends on what your plans are.

More general info here: <a href=“UW Computer Science & Engineering Department Thread - University of Washington - College Confidential Forums”>http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/university-washington/1626532-uw-computer-science-engineering-department-thread-p1.html</a></p>

To answer your original question, @forzajuve, I don’t have actual numbers (because people go to grad school, or other things). However, I can say that the only two people I know from CS in the past four years who have trouble finding a full time position (or even grad school admissions) assumed that the CS degree would guarantee them a job. Neither of them are international students.

It’s more than that; side projects, proactive networking, doing well in interviews, etc. That’s why non-CSE majors also do well and end up at top companies.

@speedsolver
you mentioned majors- (INFO, HCDE, ACMS), what is HCDE?

@bullcomp: Human Centered Design & Engineering: http://www.hcde.washington.edu/</a></p>

@speedsolver

Is there an option to do BS in CS and minor or major in Informatics. Or a double major? My son got as pre-science in Arts and Science College (not a DA). can he apply for Informatics or Human Centered Design and Engineering if he is in arts and science college?

@bullcomp: I don’t think there’s a minor in Informatics (someone correct me if I’m wrong!). But yes, your son can definitely major in both CS and Informatics.

Regardless of what current ‘college’ he’s in right now (A&S, Engineering, etc), he’s always free to apply to other departments in different colleges if he finished the prereqs! A really good friend of mine is a triple major: CS, Info, and HCDE.

@speedsolver

Wow… triple major…how much time did it take to complete?

@bullcomp: Four years (she’s graduating this year), although she may have taken a summer quarter. A lot of the requirements somewhat overlap each other.
