I got an invitation for Vision Weekend but it says it is for the "ethnically diverse." I'm half hispanic from my dad but I'm white. Would I not fit in?

Well, you sound ethnically diverse. You’ll fit in fine.

You probably will fit in just fine. There are other white people who got invited to the Vision weekend (look @ the Rice University Vision Weekend 2010 thread).

One of my friends who participated in Visions Weekend 2009 was also half-hispanic and half-white.

yes. my friend is half hispanic half white- he was invited.

Vision is for URM’s- pretty much anything except asian and white :P

Do the people who are half-hispanic half-white look white or hispanic?

I can’t speak for every half-white and half-Hispanic attendee. I’m a fourth white and I certainly don’t look like it. That being said I don’t really look like I’m Hispanic either. I will say that I’ve grown up around white people my entire life and those are the people I gravitate to to begin with. Rice’s goal is to enrich our academic experiences with the cultural and intellectual insights of other people. Vision should be a good opportunity to do just that. I know I would personally prefer to be considered only a Rice Student and not a URM, but Rice is going through a lot of trouble to get students to Vision. I think the experience will be worth it despite any apprehension you may feel.

You wont be the only person there that looks white.

I for one am 1/8th Native American but I look completely white (considering I am 7/8ths white). I know a good number of people in the same position as myself and I for one don’t feel any apprehension in going. Nobody will shun you at Vision just because you don’t fit the visual image of an URM.

i’m sure you “looking white” will not be an issue. you should go ^.^

I’m like, in the exact same position. I’m half hispanic half white, and I’m going. You should def come.

Here’s the facebook group for Vision, btw
<a href=“Facebook Public Group | Facebook”>Facebook Public Group | Facebook;

I feel a little better about it now but that fbook group didn’t help my fears… haha.

Yeah dude don’t sweat it. You’ll be straight.

So I shouldn’t be worried that my application is not competitive if I didn’t get invited to Visions [as an Indian, as in subcontinent Indian living in the U.S.]?

^^I don’t think so.

As a student with Indian heritage, you should not expect an invitation.

Ah, thank you.

I was feeling great about the weekend until I read this article [Vision Weekend ready for prospies - News](http://media.www.ricethresher.org/media/storage/paper1290/news/2010/02/12/News/Vision.Weekend.Ready.For.Prospies-3870508.shtml)

She made it sound like they are literally looking for color lol.

Don’t worry. I went and there were plenty of “white” people (like myself). It is an amazing experience since you really get to experience college at Rice for a day. And if you were as lucky as I was, you will meet some really awesome people from all different backgrounds too. Hope this helps people in the future…
