i got the invitation e-mail for this yesterday. it says "invite-only," and seems like the real deal (they'll reimburse you for travel) so...barring any significant mess-ups, does this mean that i'm accepted? :)

i don’t think it means you are accepted, although you could consider it that you likely are, but it is based on information they had prior to your applications. i seriously do not think they have had time to evaluate extensively, anyone’s app. i think they want you to consider rice and they are trying to woo you to have you come to rice, but it’s not a sure thing that you will be accepted.

Edit : found this from 2008 Thresher :

Approximately 155 prospective students attended Vision Weekend, a recruitment weekend for underrepresented minorities hosted by the Office of Admissions this past Sunday through Tuesday.

Many of the students who were invited were either accepted under Early Decision and have committed to Rice or have a strong likelihood of being accepted under Regular Decision.

Vision weekend is a trip for URM’s to showcase Rice. It does not mean that you have been or will be accepted. Then again, as Rice is investing time and money to bring you down, it appears that they have some interest in you.

It should be a good time to see Rice and get an idea of what life at Rice is like.

Oh I am so jealous @ribalto
Can you give me more information such as when did you apply to rice? Are you an ED student? And what is your ethnicity? And when VISIONS is suppose to take place? (If you don’t mind disclosing this information)

While I agree that they clearly have some interest in you, I question the reliability of the Thresher article posted above. It’s rather old, and the Thresher has printed plenty of incorrect statements. Plus, it says “many,” which is less than “most” and nowhere near “all.”

i applied under RD. the email says that the event will take place february 12-14.

so it’s similar to a likely letter? that’s exciting. rice is my first choice, but my parents aren’t willing to send me unless i can nab one of those merit scholarships. does anyone know if this invite means they’re considering me for scholarships? thanks again for the insight, everybody, i appreciate it.

Everyone who applies to Rice is automatically considered for scholarships. I wouldn’t read into this too much - just go have fun and check out Rice.

When did you guys actually submit your application? I would like to know because I thought perhaps I qualified for getting invited to VISIONS but I have not gotten anything regarding it…(yet hopefully)

Yeah don’t read into it. It may or may not be some form of a likely letter, but I would just go to Vision, enjoy yourself, and explore whether Rice is the school for you.

just a warning. I have a friend who was invited to and attended this weekend in 2010. He absolutely loved the weekend and Rice. He was waitlisted under RD with no significant changes in stats/grades/discipline.

I really wanted to get an invite to that!
I’m super interested in Rice, but my parent’s don’t have enough money to pay for a visit right now!
Oh well, everything happens for a reason, right?
:/

I am in the same exact boat, this may be the only opportunity to visit but I have not lost all hope.
A couple weeks ago I was looking up the times they sent invitations in the past and for the past 3 years it has been around Jan20 - Jan30th. So these guys may have just gotten a really early invitation.

I will continue to check my mailbox and inbox for the next two weeks like a mad person! Crosses fingers
