I know it's a shallow question, and that the term "preppy" has changed to mean different things now days, but is Yale very preppy? People seem to deem brands like Abercrombie & Fitch, Hollister, American Eagle, and Aeropostale as "preppy" clothing. I don't know but the delusional people here in Florida all strive to "LOOK" preppy without truly HAVING the priviledge that the term is indicative of. I hear Princeton is very preppy? I am not sure what other deem as preppy? Obviously students will be of very high income but Anyway, is Yale preppy, and to what respect?

Well, Abercrombie & Fitch, Hollister, American Eagle, and Aeropostale are deemed as "fake prep." And if you want a long discussion on preppy clothing, see the College Life forum (one pops up everyday). When I visited during BDD, I didn't find it overwhelmingly preppy and it didn't seem that your dress really mattered to anyone other than yourself.

Just a tip, you should calm down with your questions. You sound like you're going to have a mental breakdown. Facebook and Google can answer many of your questions. And, it's probably better that you reserve judgment until you are actually on campus for a while, rather than creating some sort of flawed perception that either disappoints you when you get there or freaks you out now.

generally, yeah, yale is pretty preppy. you'll see a lot of those brands that you mentioned... but moreso you'll see Ralph Lauren, Lacoste, Vineyard Vines, etc. remember that a lot of kids come from the northeast where boatshoes, argyle, and seersucker aren't new or uncommon.

it was kind of a shock to me, coming from the midwest where the dress decidedly isn't quite as preppy.

as far as clothes, wear whatever you want, but make sure you bring a nice suit/dress/whatever. i was dressed up all the time for various things (meetings, dinners, dances, etc).

Whoa...I must write intense because I simply had this as a side question. Never gave it THAT much thought. Just a disclaimer: I write much differently then what my attitude is. I just wanted to get a perception since my friend is OBSESSED about being preppy....she'd blow up if she saw that her clothes are deemed fake prep...haha. Anyway, I am glad that dress did not matter.

i also don't intend to say that everyone at yale dresses preppy- you'll see a ton of people heading to classes in sweats, or jeans and a t-shirt. just please, no jean shorts. ever.

it's hot as hell in the beginning of the year, so remember to bring comfortable clothes that breathe.

and then we actually have a fall, winter, and spring. so... god only knows what you'll need to wear from one day to the next.

actually, i find that yale is not nearly as preppy as some of its peers.

According to USNews, Yale has the highest fraction of non-public school kids in the Ivy League.

ive lived at 3 ivies (for more than a couple of months at each), and yale isnt nearly as preppy as it could be.

the classic primer on the subject of preppiness:

Byerly you are too much...your attempts to crack Yale crack me up! :)

Why no jean shorts??

abercrombie, AE, aeropostale, hollister ARE FAKE PREPPY.

brooks brothers, j. press, murray's, the andover shop, vineyard vines are GENUINE prep.

Ralph Lauren and Lacoste are borderline.

Most public school kids think Abercrombie is preppy. It is definately not. I attend Phillips Exeter, and we wouldnt be caught dead wearing that trash.

Frankly, debating on and on about whether A&F is "preppy" or "fake preppy"...

is not helping the reputation of either school as being "preppy," if that indeed is negative.

"I attend Phillips Exeter, and we wouldn't be caught dead wearing that trash"

and that, my friend, is why people have a perception of all prep school kids as being pretentious toolbags.

have fun in life as people realize that, in fact, you probably are one of said tools, and proceed to not be your friend, admit you, or give you a job.

seriously. i hang out some really great down to earth people from prep schools who don't wear said "fake preppy" brands, but never heard a comment like that.

"Most public school kids think Abercrombie is preppy. It is definately not. I attend Phillips Exeter, and we wouldnt be caught dead wearing that trash."

and that is why many people these days consider preppy to be a negative factor when choosing colleges.

^
No kidding. But it's not representative. I wouldn't take DiamondT's comment seriously. Most people who dress "legit" prep and subscribe to the lifestyle really couldn't care less what other people are wearing.

I mean, seriously. Please get over yourself and have some perspective. You are doing yourself and your private school friends no favors. And ok, FAKE preppy? Who determines the criteria for these things? Why do we have to categorize everybody and everything down to the authenticity of a clothing style?

Real preppies are entitled to say what is "preppy" - whether in conduct, clothing style, etc. Companies mass market peddling polo shirts, footwwear etc to high schoolers in Middle America have co-opted the word and destroyed its original meaning.

Being "preppy" should mean presenting oneself in a manner that is understated, reserved, not ostentatious and the opposite - in many ways - of stylish.

Ah, the true East Coast attitude.

I'm glad I'm 3,000 miles away from that.

Ah but then think how close you came ... if your dream had come true!
