I signed up for CS61A and Physics7A at my CalSO, and I am preparing to sign up for Math53 during Phase II of Telebears. The discussion times seem like they're already full, and while im sure they'll open up a few more, I was wondering if, since CS61A + Physics7A labs/lecture/discussions already take up a large portion of my day, is there the possibility that the only available discussion for Math53 left to me would be during a time when I have a CS61A or Physics class/lab/discussion? Is there usually more slots for discussion then the class size for lectures? Has anyone had experience with this?

Generally, I’ve found that I’ve always been able to fit math somewhere in my schedule (and I tend to take 18+ units, most of which are technical, so it’s certainly busy). People will drop in the first two weeks, and others will switch sections. There’s always a fair amount of movement in the big math classes. Just be ready to attend section at a timing you might not like.

Usually the sum of the discussion seats is less than or equal to the lecture capacity, not more.

Some of the discussion sessions will be initially closed and are opened from time to time to even out the opportunity for seekers to get in. It creates the annoying situation where you may be waitlisted for the class in one section of discussion, while a new section is opened and people whose slot is after yours jump right in.

There is an interest case to watch for - when a class is cross-listed, there may be room to register in the lecture or a particular discussion time under one of the course identities but not the other. When you see cross listed classes, check both ‘sides’ - you might find seats in the open category for one but only be able to waitlist if you register for the other name.
