It feels silly, but I do want to know my chances

GPA (unweighted)=3.82
GPA (weighted)=4.56

I don't know my exact rank as of now, but I'm at least in the top 10%

North Carolina Resident

I take mostly honors and AP (as many as possible)
I've taken three years of Spanish, taken science every year, taken math every year (and took two math classes one year), taken history/social studies every year

SAT- Math (570) Critical Reading (680) Writing (660)
Taking two subject tests: U.S. History and Literature

Duke TIP Program in 7th grade (took the SAT)
Beta Club

National Honor Roll all years
Who's Who (that stupid thing)
Recognized as an outstanding student in Art
Environmental Club (10th grade and 12th grade)
Gay/Straight Alliance (10th grade) (it was abolished by the principal)
National Honor Society (11th and 12th grade)
ASPCA active member (2008 and 2009)
Humane Society active member (2008 and 2009)
Volunteer Secretary for the Harp Seals Organization (2008 and 2009)
Also nomination for Student UN and People to People

AP tests taken: AP Psych. (3), AP English Lang. (3), AP Statistics (2; it was very difficult)
AP tests to take: AP Earth/env., AP U.S. History, AP Calculus AB, AP Gov., and AP English Lit.
I'm also thinking about self-studying for some, but I'm really not sure

I'm also taking Chemistry Honors this year (all I could get)

I also made the highest grades in the class in history and science this year, and possibly english (all AP)
I'm really good in history, so I could get AP Scholar? I hope! haha

I'm Biology/pre-med major, so before you ask why I didn't take AP Bio or Chem, know that my school is crappy at organizing student schedules. Therefore, I never had a chance to take these classes (unfortunately).

How does it look?

Oh! And I also might play either Varsity Soccer or softball this spring.

It looks good. I would say your SATs might hurt but then again, you seem like the well rounded person UNC admires. Playing sports wouldn’t hurt though I wouldn’t say to just play for 1 season. Colleges look for consistency.

A 1910 isn’t high enough?

Yeah but you didn’t do so hot on the math one.on the old scale its only a 1250.

Actually, I had a conversion done and it’s about a 1300. On the old scale, they weighed the two other scores more without the writing score. Also, I’m in-state and above the average score for those at Chapel Hill-1800

Maybe that should clear things up…

if in state average is 1800, i’d say you have a good chance. Don’t worry about it too much. if it’s meant to be, it’ll happen! everyone i know has had things work out for them in great ways.

My son has a friend who has similar GPA and SAT scores as you (but in top 20%), he is also senior class president and all region in a varsity sport. He was deferred (in-state).

My assessment:

Your GPA is good enough to get into UNC-- I got accepted EA with a 4.56 W and 3.84 UW.

However, your test scores are subpar, in my opinion. I’m not just referring to your SAT score; your AP’s are not spectacular either. Also, I’d like to see some proof that the average in-state SAT score is 1800; that seems a little low. If possible, I would retake the SAT, while focusing mainly on the math section.

Your extras are average. I see nothing that stands out from other applicants, which is not necessarily a bad thing; from my experience, UNC does not look at extras as much as they do GPA and SAT.

Overall, I would say UNC is a match for you; however, your GPA is really the only thing holding you up. I think there is a good chance you will get admitted, but don’t be suprised if you don’t. A lot of it depends on the other applicants; not everyone will have a 4.56 GPA, but someone with a 4.5 and a 2100 SAT will probably rank higher than you.

Good luck.

On a second look, your math and science courses are stronger than the person I mentioned and UNC lists rigor of schedule as being very important. Also, 10% is considerably better than 20%, so I think that your overall application is stronger. Good Luck!

Here’s your proof. I’m sorry everyone can’t be as optimistic as you (sarcasm). I can’t take the SAT again anyway because the next test date is in March.

The lower average is 1800, while the highest is 2090, so I’m in the middle of the averages.
Also, I may not do sports, but I thought it stood out that I had been consistent in the same type of ECs. Oh well, I guess I’ll have to just wait and worry even more after seeing what people had to say.

I didn’t mean you Sparrow, btw. lol

blairb-

I’m not sure why you think you I lack optimism; I said you have a good chance of getting admitted. If you are looking for people to praise your achievements, this is not the right place. A chance thread is for others to assess your chances (hence the name “chance thread”), and that is exactly what I did.

Also, as I suspected, 1800 is not the average. In statistics (which I see you have taken), we call this “Q1”, meaning that scoring an 1800 would only place you higher than 25% of the students. Moreover, these numbers are from last year. UNC released the average SAT score for its EA admittants. If I remember correctly, the average combined Math and Verbal score was 1343.

I’m sorry you can’t retake the SAT. I suppose the only thing you can do now is wait and see. Good luck; I hope you get admitted.

I was not looking for praise, but I also was not looking for borderline insults.

I know the Statistics jargon and know that 25% scored lower and 25% scored higher, which is why that is the middle 50%. Again, the lower combination of scores on that range is 1800. And last year’s scores are as new as it gets, so I consider that estimate to be fairly accurate.

So, if you average the middle scores from that range, you would get 1940. Since I made a 1910, I don’t really consider that middle score in the middle 50% too far off.

(650+650+640)

Thank you for your chance assessment anyway.

i really don’t think gobraves was insulting you–he said you have a good chance, but it won’t be a slam dunk. i’d have to agree.

And just a note, you wouldn’t find out about AP Scholar until the summer or fall, so even if you do well on the tests this year, it won’t affect your admissions.

Oh, that does make sense. I remember waiting for the scores during the summer of last year.

I guess the response just seemed a little harsh, Leah, but I know that it’s hard to get certain chances for any college.

I did see the accepted thread for early decision though, which made me feel better about my SAT score. I saw someone admitted with a score like 1840 or 1850 or something (which isn’t bad of course, but may be jeered at by some)

Thanks for the comments anyway!
