"Plus all the rumors that Ithaca's weather is enough to make people hate their 4 years there..."

the weather in Ithaca is about the same as Boston. There's a few good colleges there too, but you won't be doing yourself any favor with the weather by going to any other far northeastern school. Ithaca just gets picked on the most.

Northeast weather isn't bad at all. At least I dont think so. Then again, I don't sit in my room whining and complaining about it ... I go snowboarding and play intramural ice hockey all throughout winter - the more snow, the better. I got everybody together for a big snowball fight on libe slope last year, it was totally awesome! There are days when it does get really cold out, but there's nothing that a quality winter jacket, hat, and gloves can't solve.

You can either sit inside the whole time and complain about a the cold breeze, or you can have some fun with it and make it into a great time. The choice is yours!

not much ... NYC is a bit warmer and doesn't get as much snow - but you'll still be bringing along the same winter coat. Go to Florida to get out of the cold, NOT NYC.

The northeast part of the US is cold and snowy in winter whether you are in Boston, Cambridge, MA, Providence, RI , NYC, Ithaca, etc. The Boston area is very cold in winter and gets a lot of snow but I never hear of prospective applicants to Harvard or MIT worrying about that when they apply there.

The cold weather should be put into perspective. First, as Gomestar mentioned, there are winter sports that are fun and available at Cornell. (You can learn to snowboard or ski for PE credit.) Also, at Cornell, the winter break is long so you have 4 - 5 weeks that you will be away from Ithaca's winter weather. And the school year has beautiful seasons at either end.

I haven't spent a full winter in Ithaca yet, but what I have heard from friends in NYC is that Ithaca is about 15 degrees cooler than NYC or NJ.

As a freshman, I don't really mind the weather. I'm not sure if it's excitement from my first year here, but I haven't had too much difficulty with the weather. The walk from North campus to the engineering quads has been enough for me to break in to a sweat when I'm in heavy gear so oddly enough, I try to avoid the scarves, humungous jackets and other warm clothing. The only thing I've really noticed which is different from NJ is that there are strong winds which can flip umbrellas so get a really strong umbrella! Otherwise, nothing too out of the ordinary.

so far, it seems like other places are getting worse weather like missouri and buffalo with their record snows and ice storms. last semester, it only snowed three times and it wasn't bad at all.

i'm from arizona and I didn't think it was too bad. of course, we had a mild winter...so I don't know. i hear cornell's getting normal again, with 9 degree lows. this will be interesting

i live in nyc and the weather this past winter was totally out of the ordinary..but in a good way. at one point, it was over 70degrees at the end of december. it did not snow and im loving that. has it snowed at ithaca? friends in binghamton had no snow, but apparently buffalo acquired over an inch in november. i hope ithaca is not like that. anyone else like to share?

It depends on how tolerant you are of the weather. I've only been here for one semester, but I think the weather is one of the biggest things I hate about Cornell. It's really unpredictable and miserable to be in if you're not fond of snow and rain. I bundle up, but after walking 10 minutes in cold weather my whole face stings from the biting cold and my legs freeze up (even wearing double layers). I live in PA, which is not far south of Ithaca, yet the I still think there's a big difference.

So IMO, the weather sucks horribly but you deal with it because it's Cornell. Oh yeah, and don't forget the hills and construction and mud.

It's freaking 10 degrees right now. And walking to frats in this weather is horrible. I dunno, I think it's gonna be below freezing for a few more months now.

I think it's been getting warmer and warmer every year. Last semester was so unbelievable. I've been waiting for the snow since the beginning of October, which is when it usually comes. By mid-November, it usually sticks. This year, it only snowed maybe two times the whole fall semester. The thing is, a lot of people here really like the cold because it brings snow. Ithaca has the most beautiful I've ever seen, and I've been living in the Northeast for most of my life. Ithaca has the big soft flakes. And when it snows, it's not as cold.

FYI, an inch of snow is not very much snow at all. i have heard that the weather fluctuates a lot in Ithaca because of the lake, which also contributes to lake-effect snow... but i'm not expecting it to be much different from the rochester climate i'm used to.. which has been very mild so far this year; we just got our first real snowfall and cold temperatures.

the weather is seriously something that you really shouldn't worry about. I was born and raised in FL, I used to think 50 was freezing, and now I think 50 is warm. You get adjusted fast. I still like the warm weather more, but the cold isn't a problem.

Hey I don’t think it can get worse than what we’re going through here in MN….wind chill readings 25 below to 35 below zero…haha…nothing beats the burning sensation you get when you inhale…too bad we don’t have more snow tho…lol!

Ya we had windchill at 25 last weekend here in Mass...it's cold everywhere so don't think that you'll only be cold in Ithaca lol [and we are SUPER below normal snow which sux...if it's cold I want snow!]

(haha one of my friends had a friend up for Texas to look at the school and she almost died. Best quote of the night "OMG I'm so cold I could puke!" hahahaha)
