Ithaca's Park school or Newhouse?

I've been accepted to both.
Ithaca will be easily afforadable for me while Newhouse will be more expensive but still managable. Both schools seem really incredible.

Money aside, which school would offer me the best opportunities as a journalism major(interested in sports and international journalism) both during my time there and after I graduate?

both are great in the field; have you visited? totally depends on which school you feel is a better fit; both have excellent opportunities…Syracuse does have Div I sports that many journalism students get involved with; Ithaca is Div III…and I think that Newhouse has the edge internationally…

I’ve visited Ithaca and I’m visiting Syracuse in about a week. The money Ithaca offered me is incredible, especially since I’m considering law school. Also, I know I’d be near the top of the class at Ithaca, as opposed to just another student in the very competitive Newhouse. So, I think that would give me priority with internships, interviews, etc. However, I wonder if Newhouse gets the overall edge over Ithaca when it comes to internships, alumni connections, etc.

At the same time, going into the whole college application process, I knew since the very beginning I wanted a big sports school and Syracuse gives me that, but Ithaca does not.

Needless to say, I’m still very torn.
Thank you for your input!

i’m trying to make a similar decisions, i’m between mizzou, syracuse, ithaca and emerson. I’m visiting syracuse the 13th, but something i keep hearing is that their approach to teaching journalism, comm is very different. ithaca lets you take more classes in comm starting freshman year, syracuse wants a more liberal-arts based education. i’m going to ask about this when I see syracuse, but that’s just what I heard from ithaca. hope it helps!

Maltal: I too am trying to make a decision between Newhouse and Emerson. And you’re right— I’ve heard all the same things. I’m assuming you’re RD while I got in as a transfer and my professors at my current school say exactly that. SU approaches it very differently. Students don’t touch equipment or really get much experience using the facilities until their junior year. I also know that as a transfer they take very few credits (so I’m looking at another 3 years, instead of 2) because they want me to have more of a liberal arts education. I think if I do decide on SU, I may have a better understanding of equipment use, editing, producing, directing… etc than the current students because I’ve already done these things… (and they don’t like that.)

I’ll be going to the accepted students day on the 27th so we will see! But to be honest… I think I’m leaning more towards Emerson… how about you?

guys: the reason that SU has a different approach (with liberal arts requirements and all) is because they are accredited; not saying good or bad; it just is that way…if the other schools are also accredited, there will be liberal arts requirements as well as a requirement to minor or double major outside the school of communication.

Yeah, I realize that. But I also got in to Hofstra (same accredidation) and they’re taking all my credits.

Either way, I am excited to see the new facilities at SU! That’s my favorite part about going to schools… Checking out all their equipment. Anyone seen the new Newhouse 2 & 3?

I’m struggling with the exact same decision! I am interested in photography and advertising and both are great programs. I think i’d like the social scene more at Ithaca since it’s more artsy and the kids there seem less…cliquey, but I feel like Newhouse is better prestige wise. I am surprised though because I only got 9,000 from Ithaca a year and none from Syracuse and I am graduating with a 4.0 GPA and a 1360 on my SAT’s. Oh well. Yeah, but I don’t know what to choose. I visited Ithaca during Ithaca Today and they said that Ithaca was ranked HIGHER than Newhouse, but that’s hard to believe for some reason.

thank you everyone for the advice

Syracuse does definitely focus on a liberal arts education which does have its pros and cons. i would like to double major in journalism and international relations. that is something i can do at syracuse but not at ithaca because no international relations major is offered. However, as a freshman coming into ithaca, i feel like i can get hands on experience right way and i’d have to wait more for those opportunities at syracuse.

I’m just choosing between being a big fish in a small pond at ithaca or a small fish in a big pond at syracuse.

Is the Newhouse name worth paying for?

That’s a really good question. I visited Syracuse for the open house and every time I asked a student how they liked Newhouse it always started with WELL… One said it was too theoretically-based. I read in a student written college book that a student said newhouse courses were much easier than they had thought they would be and that he was very unimpressed after coming to this top program. I 'm really confused. I’m leaning away from Ithaca, and Syracuse and more towards Mizzou and Emerson, but my question is: How is Mizzou a better journalism school when they accept almost 80 percent and Newhouse accepts only 8?

Ithaca is a technical journalism school, Newhouse is a professional journalism school. I will say that being at the top of your class does not matter to most interviewers in journalism. They care about what you’ve done. Decide which approach is best for you.
