It's Gilmore Girls' fault.

Well not quite, I've always wanted to go to an Ivy League, but my love for the show Gilmore Girls certainly hasn't hurt it. Researching further and such has really made my heart set on Yale.

So! Here are my courses for next year (junior year):
AP Calculus BC
AP US History
AP Chemistry
AP Micro/Macro Economics
AP English
Honors Spanish IV
Honors Newspaper II

EC's include Big Brother/Big Sister, a service club at school, Academic Team, internship/producer of a teen radio show w/ 20 person staff and 2 shows a month, piano for 10 years and multiple awards, Global Concerns club, Progressive Independents, school newspaper.

Awards include player of the year 9th grade Academic Team, selected to perform in most advanced group in Multi-Piano Concert, producer of radio show, editorials editor of newspaper, and several academic acknowledgements. Future awards will probably include captain of Academic Team, editor-in-chief of newspaper (well on my way to this now), founder of Photography Club, and possibly president of service club.

I currently have made straight A's throughout high school, and made a 1450 on my PSATs, and have not yet taken the SATs. (Will take them junior & senior year) If I stay on this track and continue to make straight A's, do you think I have a shot at Yale?

I will also be taking 5 APs senior year, and hopefully just one other honors course.

I can't say I really know all that much about it, but you sound like you have an excellent chance. I'm really feeling depressed reading all these posts, I also have my heart set on Yale - I completely agree with you about Gilmore Girls - but being international I don't think I stand much of a chance. I can't take AP courses, or do Big Brother/Big Sister, and I'm worried my application will just look empty...

didn't rory go to harvard in the end..?

What do you mean 1450 on PSAT's, it's out of 240

marina_b, where are you from?

My mom and sister watch that show, she really did go to Yale.

Sorry to say I'm not as smart as Rory so I won't be joining her there. I'll have to settle for Cornell or a reputed non ivy league like U of Chicago.

You have a great shot, apply for sure.

--What do you mean 1450 on PSAT's, it's out of 240--

The PSAT that I took was still on the old scale of 160, and I scored a 145. It's common in my area though to just add a zero on the end because people can register a 1450 quicker than they do a 145 since that is the SAT scale.

--didn't rory go to harvard in the end..?--

Nope, Yale :) It made it much easier to keep her on the show.

& thanks for the encouragement. Sometimes it's very intimidating reading posts here, because some people are so hardcore. I don't think I can do much more than I already am without going on stress overload, so I'm glad that this just might possibly be good enough for those schools.

(And Cornell and U of Chicago are fantastic schools!)

sorry for being so boring, but didn't rory got accepted to harvard?
when did she decide to go to yale and why?
guess i missed a lot of episodes...

just curious :)

lol yea seriously. But, I would count you as one of those people :). Because if you actually look at it, those people with LONG lists are actually people who list stuff that really doesn't matter to colleges, like being a member of a club for 1 year etc. But what you've listed is a few in-depth leadership positions, plus a very rigorous course, that if you actually compared to those others, you are even, if not higher then they are.

Good luck on the SAT's and I'm sure you'll be fine.

Just remember, everyone applying to the Ivies has either the same SAT and GPA as you or better. there are few who will be below. Make sure you have something to set you apart.

--Make sure you have something to set you apart.--

One of my biggest things, I think, is the internship I have at the radio station and my producer role (which I will have had for 3 years by the time I apply) of a large, teen-run radio show. I am also a published writer, and I am hoping that my writing and piano playing will lend itself to several more awards.

--sorry for being so boring, but didn't rory got accepted to harvard?

Yep, Rory (rather unrealistically) got accepted into Harvard, Yale, AND Princeton. She decided to go to Yale after weighing the pros and cons of every school, and realized that Yale will be only 30 minutes from home, plus, her grandparents went there. Also, Paris didn't get accepted into Harvard and did get accepted to Yale, and Rory wanted to be with her as well. So, for the sake of the show, Yale worked out best.

thanx a lot for the info ;)

Yeah Rory does add something to the attractiveness of Yale. I don't know why but I never thought about Yale until I saw the show when my mom and sister were watching it a couple times.

I seriously know someone who applied to Yale because it was in Gilmore Girls. Weird stuff, eh?

yeah dude.

artcoffeejazz--- you're taking all of those classes as a junior?! good luck with all of that, it will definitely be a challenge. but if you can juggle all of those ap's plus extracurriculars, you should have a pretty excellent chance at yale (i know people from my school, which is 30 mins from yale, btw, that have gotten in with less ap's). good luck!

--you're taking all of those classes as a junior?! --

Haha, I know it's crazy. Actually though, I know at least three other people in my grade who are planning on taking 5 APs next year as well. We're all a bit psychotic, but I know there are people out there even more ambitious than I am. Hopefully it will all pay off in the end.

Oh, and- I think Rory's current boy, Logan, makes Yale seem ten times more appealing than it did the first year she was there ;)

hey ena, I'm from Sydney, Australia. and also, artcoffeejazz, you said it was unrealistic that Rory got into Harvard, Yale, Princeton. I thought those colleges had a similar admissions standard, so that if you got into one you were likely to get into the rest...
