nah man.... you got it twisted... i said that i was a loser, mainly because i was being so paranoid.. . not any1 else on CC

you think that its a reasonable hook?

nah man.... you got it twisted... i said that i was a loser, mainly because i was being so paranoid.. . not any1 else on CC

you think that its a reasonable hook?

i don't think i got it twisted dude, if you meant being paranoid makes you a loser, you should articulate better.

1) Sit for the SAT. You may do better in that format, as indicated by your SAT IIs
2) work on your leadership positions. Don't worry about hours in ECs, worry about accomplishments. Talk about the inner city kid that you helped teach to read and turned around his life.
3) understand that Harvard, Princeton, and Stanford are big reaches for everyone. You stand a good chance, but that means one chance in 11.
4) Princeton is probably a little easier to get in ED than the others EA. Princeton is much harder to get in RD than the others RD. (H and S)
5) take a look at Rice as a match school.
6) Harvard SSP will not help you get in anywhere. You might want to spend that time volunteering somewhere and prepping for the SAT. On the other hand, you will probably enjoy it.

You remind me of myself :)
I'm a junior too, and besides being a girl, we have a lot of the same stats.

Ugh. I'm applying EA to Princeton, though, because I LOVE Princeton :)

You have a good scores and you're a solid student, but who knows who they'll accept at Harvard? I'm a bit anti-Harvard because I know that I'm not a super-genius kiddo and would die there. But...Yeah.

Just show passion and I think you have a good chance.

By looking at the members of collegeconfidential, I'd say no.

So basically you guyz are changing my minds... given my stats and such... do you think i should go Princeton ED or should I stick with Harvard EA?

plus is my ACT score ok? do i really need to take the SAT instead?

i'd like some comments... especially if u got into any of these schools...

by the way you misspelled Johns Hopkins. My assumption is if you misspell the name of the school on th application you will be rejected flat out. You didn't take enough time to realize that the name of the school is Johns not John means that you barely care for the school. (I understand here you just missed an s but your college application you're expected to go over carefully... Just warning you.)

I think what would have to stand out in your application is why this particular school.

Your stats will work for WUSTL but they won't take you if they think they are being used as a backup for an Ivy. Every year, kids with amazing stats complain about being waitlisted there while those with lesser stats but who clearly want WUSTL get in. It is known as the "Tufts Syndrome" but the two best known for it are Tufts and WUSTL. So the Harvard summer program thing may turn them against you!

It is a great school. My son is there and my daughter applied there (and was waitlisted -- but she would have still gone to her current school if they had admitted her -- so they did have her pegged!).

how will i be able to express my wanting of getting into those schools... so they know that I am interested?

do you think the hook of being 1 of 9 kids will work at these schools?.. if so how should i portray it?

The top schools don't care about demonstrated interest. They get so many top applications, and such a high yield, that it doesn't matter. Only schools afraid of losing acceptances to other, higher level schools, really care about demonstrated interest, to protect their yield.

Being one of nine kids is a hook if you raised them yourself in poverty conditions. If your parents are reasonably well off, it's a choice, not a hardship.

it surprises me to discover the existence of kids like you. take my comment whichever way you please

My guess is the top three will go either way, you could get wait-listed, rejected, accepted. Its so hard to predict, even with a 1600 these would not be certain.

-Harvard (Applying Early Action)
-Princeton
-Stanford

These two are a lock. WUSTL waitlists people like you, but the second you say you will come they will roll out the red carpet. You might even get scholarship money from these.

-Washington University in St. Louis
-John Hopkins

You know this one is a lock, my guess with some significant money.
-University of Michigan

My only concern is the lack of schools in between JHU/ WUSTL and HPS. JHU/ WUSTL have great med schools, but they are weed out factories and are no better than getting people into med school (I'd say WUSTL is worse) than the lower ivies. If I were you I would give a couple in the range of Duke, Brown, Penn, Columbia, Dartmouth, Cornell a look. These are schools where you have a strong shot and they do fantastic at getting people into med schools. HPS could come up empty in which case options would be nice. You might still might end up liking JHU more, but you never know.

bump please

thanks for the advice slipper, bandit, DianeR and Kissthesky, i greatly appreciate your input

should I go ED Princeton or EA Harvard.. or what? (i'd like to get into one of these)

i'd also like to know what top schools or ivies you guyz think are best if I want to go into medicine....

what do you think my hook should be? I don't think I want to mention that I am1 of 9 children...

Rice is right next door to Baylor Medical School in Houston (not Baylor Univ.). They share some Profs and Rice students do research for med school profs. Obviously, HYP are strong for med school admits. You need to decide which school is best for you. They each have their own character and quirks. Harvard, Yale, and Rice have the residential college system of housing. Princeton is moving that direction. Princeton has upper class eating clubs (Google), the others don't. Do some research, and visit.

Mentioning your family is not a problem, just don't make it more than it is. It does have significance in your life.

bump it up please

so the general consensus is that I should discuss my family?... do you think itll even be a hook?

i think that my weakness may be my lack of a hook...

bump please

I hope you get rejected from Hopkins...I know I'd flat out reject you for not even caring enough to spell the name correctly; show's a definate lack of care and interest. Besides, there are thousands of other applicants who care enough to spell the name correctly.

wow now I feel bad
