It's time for Vietnamese thread !!!

@duncan: try the MIT trick by calling DHL USA :D I did and found out there was truly nothing for me via DHL :)

@Ly: I do have the information of my fate :) It is over and done with on the other side of the Atlantic :D

@ipsen: cool idea, gonna do it today, the DHL center is just 2 blocks away from my house :D, gotta ask them :(
@Twib: you are so lucky anyway. It's true that many VNese students comming to the US and have to study in Community college. I think, the matter is that, they are all exchange students who are restricted alot by the counsellor and the host family. Some of my friends who had been exchange students told me that they werent allowed to apply to American Colleges (I mean Universities and LACs). The reason is that the high school didnt give them the diplomat after finishing year 12 in the US and 2 former years in VN. They didnt accept the VNese results as well as certificates. Therefore, they have no way rather than chosing CC to stand still at the states. Poor them rite.

duncanctc: i'm still waiting for LSE :( it's the middle of March now and none of us has heard anything from them. hey duncan and ipsen, have you received any letter from MIT?
twib: i agree with you about the CC thing. Many of my friends had to study in Community College then transfered to Universities in CA, VA, FL...Anyway, it's still better compared to those doing exchange-program in America high schools. Most students have to return to Vietnam and continue high school and try to keep up with their peers.

anhanh: hearing early from LSE is not good, I was rejected one month after applying.

@ Anhanh: Yeah, cevonia is rite. If hearing early from LSE it means you hold a rejected letter. But dun worry lor, you will get into this school with full ride. :D :D And forget about the American Unis :D

@anhanh: He, my snail rejection is not that fast :D I expect it to be here on Thursday :D

@cevonia: what will you major in at P'ton?

I got kick off from Laf... dun wanna say anything now...SAD :(

I'm going to try for Woody Woo, and if I don't make it then Political Economy.

For Cevonia exclusively:

So you are aiming for Political Sciences, right? Are you really into Politics that much? :P

Most of powerful politicians are lawyers or law-degree holders :) I wonder why do you choose to read straight Politics? IMO, the only thing important Politics is "How to undoubtably lie?", thus an education in Law should be more appropriate.

Out of interest, did you apply to Harvard as well? From my narrow view of US education, P'ton is more theoretical-science-oriented, and Harvard is more non_science-oriented (it may well be the case of Einstein affects my biased opinion)

I'm considering law, but since law in the States is post-grad only (i.e. you can only do it after you hold a Bachelor's) it doesn't really matter what I study first. I'm into both Politics and Economics, but only the theoretical aspects of them, which I enjoy studying. I'll probably go into investment banking if I don't go to law school.

I was going to apply to Harvard (but was accepted to Princeton ED, so never submitted the application). Both Harvard and Princeton are very strong in the theoretical sciences and social sciences, though Princeton is also quite good at engineering. When it comes down to individual departments, I believe Princeton is better at Economics while Harvard is better at Government (and so on and so forth). However, at the undergrad level it does not make the slightest amount of difference as both are very, very good.

It is a misconception that Einstein taught at Princeton (he didn't - he was a member of the Institute for Advanced Study (<a href="http://www.ias.edu%5B/url%5D">www.ias.edu</a>) which is next to but not affiliated with Princeton). He did have an office at Princeton before the IAS campus was built, I believe.

No, I didn't think of Einstein as a Princetionian :D The fact he was there as an academic, together with the PG time of Feynman makes me think P'ton is stronger in Sciences :)

Ahh... yeah, most of the great physicists of that era taught at Princeton at one time or another.
What are you planning to major in? I suspect it's a science based, as you applied to MIT

Woody is great, as far as I know, it's not that theoritical. actually, I think the program is life-based (?) the students work on real issues, plan real policies.
@duncanctc: chia buon. well, i know you like Lafay a lot, but you gotta make it at a better one. (and tell you this, I feel literally nothing for Lafay. it seems that you guys go crazy with its engineering program :D)

:D Eventually, my rejection arrived here :D I expected it to be here on Thursday, but snails these days have evolved so much that they could go TransAtlantic within 3 days :D

@Cevonia: I major in Engineering, with the course name being Engineering Science; although my preference is a career in Telecom :)

@Huong Ly: what is so good of Laf's engineering programs?

@cevonia what were your stats?

SAT: 1530 (730V 800M)
SATII: Writing 800 2C 800 French 800 Physics 800
HS: Not ranked, but based on IB results 4/278
IB: Bilingual Diploma, 44 points (GPA equivalent 3.9 or so)

Major ECs: Yearbook, Debate, Swim Team Captain, Magazine, Piano, Community Service (I'm sure I'm forgetting something important but can't remember now)

Essays: Very good, never saw recommendations.

I didn't have a real hook; I'm not anything other than a BWRK. Proof that we can still get in.

hehe, what is a BWRK??

Bright Well Rounded Kid. Those who are involved and good students but don't have specific hooks. Made popular by Admissions Confidential, a book by a (former) Duke Admissions Officer.

cevonia: oh you also applied to LSE? I thought you're in Singapore now.
You have great SATs results, good ECs, not to mention good essays (as u said). Princeton is interviewing 4-5 Vietnamese students in order to decide whom to reject/accept. There're lots of surprise in this application season.

duncanctc: Bro Hieu told me i shouldn't be worried as for LSE, no news means good news. But i should be worried.. if i was rejected by all US unis :( (a huge tragedy) i wouldn't know where to go next year :( poor me. any news from Dartmouth?

ipsen: T_T really dunno what to say to you. :( But anyway, forget MIT. Oxford is waiting for you with a bright future and fantastic 3-years. Imagine the time when you graduate from Balliol with an honor BSc in Engineering

lol, it is a true hook :D I cannot grab such a title, as I belong to KWEH (Kids with Eccentric Hooks) :D

Cevonia, you surely read a lot of books :D I have never ever touched a book on admission processes :D

@anhanh: it is 4 years long :D And my degree would be MEng :D
