I've also posted this question in the IU Bloomington forum, but I'm hoping someone here could also comment:
IU Bloomington is always listed in the top music schools, but is it also good for music ed? I've heard that sometimes music ed is treated like the ugly step-sister. Could someone comment on whether the school is as good in music ed as it is in performance?

If you’re from Indiana (or somewhere with reciprocity) the music ed program is probably worth the money. I don’t know about this school specifically to answer your question though. I think something to look at is whether they refer to their program as a “performance-based” program, or basically how heavy the recital/concert requirements are. I would assume based on how IU is one of the few top music schools to offer doctoral degrees in music ed (or any degrees for that matter; plenty of the top music schools take the “ugly stepsister” thing to the level of not offering it) that their program is more than good.

Just a quick note to say that we met a Music Ed major at S’s IU audition day who was a very happy camper. Trombone freshman who loves the program. He said the Music Ed kids started their own jazz big band, and he thinks they’re awesome & really competitive. So much going on there, it seems you can’t go wrong.
