As my DD finalizes her college list and starts her applications on August 1st, we were wondering if Indiana University and Purdue should be considered matches or safeties for her. She is OOS, but finances are not a problem for either.

IU Kelley lists Direct Admit SATs at 1270+ (CR + Math) and GPA at 3.7+, while Purdue Krannert lists Direct Admit SATs at 1250+ and GPA at 3.5+. DD took the SAT once and has a 1280 and an unweighted GPA of 3.8.

I'm not going to list the rest of her stats and ECs as I'm really only looking to see if qualifying for Direct Admit puts her in an almost guaranteed position for admission so that these schools can be considered safeties or is there a chance that she will still be rejected.

Thanks.

If finance is no problem then undoubtedly Kelley

OOS at Kelley should be ok for admission – encourage her to completer her application in September since IU does rolling admissions and tends to be first in/first out. Many of our in state high school students apply in late August/early September and are accepted to Bloomington by the end of September, greatly simplifying the fall schedule.

They are safety’s

Thanks for the responses so far.

As a follow on… These are her #1 and #2 choices. How comfortable would you be if it was you or your child and only sent in applications to these 2 schools?

Kelley is a wonderful undergraduate business school, ranking top 10 in the nation. Since she is auto admit if she only applies to Kelley you should be happy.

I love Kelley at IU, but I would be not at all comfortable, as a parent, if my child only applied to two schools. I consider five applications to be the absolute minimum. It is not that hard to find at least five colleges that you like.

I have no problem with students having a strong preference for one or two schools. But not applying to others is risky. Perhaps doubly so since you are out of state. State schools are often more selective about out of state students, and sometime auto admits are not as automatic as they appear. Think of it this way; she plans to major in business and every good business leader always has a good “Plan B” in case “Plan A” does not work for some reason.

Another reason for targeting more than two schools, is that the student might change their mind. Their priorities might change. Plus, it simply gives them more options. Both IU and Purdue are excellent schools, but there are other great choices. Take a look at Miami University in Ohio. Its Farmer School of Business school is highly respected. Also, I recommend exploring at least a couple of private colleges.

We are OOS and my daughter had both of these choices with similar stats as your daughter. She was awarded more $$ and Honors at Krannert - but I wanted her to choose what would be the best fit for her - and she chose Kelley. She can’t explain why - just said it felt like a better fit for her. I know Kelley is “ranked” higher, but Krannert is still a good program and shouldn’t be overlooked if a student feels a better fit there. There are areas in which each school is stronger.

She did apply to more than these two, and had 5 choices. I agree with the above post that her school lists and favorites changed over senior year so it may not hurt to have a few more choices. But I joke that if we only knew IU would be the choice how easy senior year would have been - it was her first application and she heard back in a couple of weeks. Purdue is no longer rolling and sends out decisions in mid December (although Krannert sent out a likely letter a few months before that).

Good luck to your daughter! Can’t believe my daughter will be all moved in at IU by this time next week.

I would not consider being slightly above avg for a prior year and OOS makes Kelly a safety. Match yes.

@scrabblemomb Thanks for the info. Purdue is slightly ahead and is her #1 choice right now, so it is good to hear that you like Krannert too. I also hope that she gets some $$ from Purdue. DD will be sending her IU app in very soon. It is all prepared, but she will be getting a teacher to go through her essay once high school is in session. Hopefully she gets accepted and gets an early notification from IU. That will be a huge relief for her and will allow her to skip a lot of other applications.

@NROTCgrad I agree that she should have more choices as she may decide that she wants something different, like staying closer to home. I will encourage her to apply to others, but it may be hard if she gets an early acceptance from IU. She really believes that these are the two schools for her.

If she gets early acceptance to IU, and that is her first or second choice, then of course there is no need to continue to apply to others. That works.

The risk of only applying to one or two schools is that if not accepted then the student is stuck with very few options. Better to do the exploration and prioritization early, without pressure. Also, as I noted, people do change their minds.
