I've been very impressed with Indiana University's IT network. The uptime has got to be well above 99.9% if my own experience is typical of the system as a whole.

Thanks for the info, bigredfan.

Can anyone explain what is needed for wireless connection in the dorms? (Sorry mom is pretty clueless). Supposedly there is an ethernet connection. So does DD need to bring a wireless router?

Students are not allowed to set up their own wireless router. There is wireless coverage of vast areas of the campus, including many if not all dorms. There is an ethernet connection in each dorm room. See Data Network Services -- UITS Supported Secure Wireless Sites

I see that only certain lounges or floors accommodate wireless - so I assume if DD is not in those areas she will need an ethernet cable. I love IU (I'm an alum) but not sure why it's in the top 20 for IT. I have seen other campuses where you can use the internet on your laptop everywhere including out on the lawn.

In fact it is much more widespread than just the list of locations - maybe those are the routers? And I have sat outside in a variety of locations around campus and picked up a good wireless signal. They are also upgrading this summer. There used to be a map that showed the coverage but it is unavailable right now (maybe because of the upgrading). IT is great at IU, the high ranking is well-deserved, in my opinion.
