I've been cheated by the school system, I really have. (Major rant)

I've gotten 8 "B's" as a final grade throughout high school.

2 of them have been 'legitimate' B's, where I received the grade because it reflected my class performance.

6 of them I've received "B+", or to be more exact, 89.xx%. NONE of my teachers have rounded my grade, although it is common that other teachers in the schools DO round, not mine.

I go to a competitive magnet HS in NY, the teachers range from 'joke' easy to 'ridiculous' hard. No surprise I get the ridiculous unwilling to compromise teachers who are VERY rigid with their grading.

What angers me is that the only grade colleges see is the final semester grade, a B. The difference between a kid with 80.xx% (sometimes 79.xx% because some teachers round) and 89.xx% is HUGE. But when it comes down to it, colleges see that both students received a B.

tl:dr - I've gotten 6 89%'s in HS, some teachers in my school round, none of my teachers round. Colleges only see a final semester grade, in the eyes of ADcom, they cannot differentiate between a student who slacked and got an 80% or a student who busted their ass off and falls short of an A by less than 1%.

Well, I think it is unfair that your teachers don’t round grades. My honors/college prep courses have teachers who round grades up when it is something like 89.5+% and my AP teachers round once it hits 89%. But I am happy that colleges only see the letter grade at my school since I would much prefer they see a bunch of As rather than low 90s. :D

Maybe if it happened to me a couple times, it wouldn’t be as bad. But this has happened SIX times. ANY of those B’s could have been an A if I had a compromising teacher. It’s really my fault that I didn’t try that much harder to get the extra .XX% increase.

What ticks me off is how flawed the grading system is where they cannot differentiate between 89% and 80%.

Haha well at least you don’t try to be cocky and say it’s not your fault.
What can I say, life is unfair. I had a teacher who didn’t round grades also. Had she rounded I would’ve gotten an A-. But, oh well, you move on.

I’ve been in your situation before. I got a 89.4 and I still got a B from my teacher.

Even though I was one of the nicest students and I always participated in class and ****.

She gave me a B and ruined my opportunity to get a 4.0 for the first time in my life.
Oh well, I got my first 4.0 in college just last semester. :)

You’re saying they didn’t round. Have you talked to them, or are you thinking that they are supposed to do everything for you?

I got 79 for 1st, and 89 for 2nd semester in AP Chem. The teacher didn’t round it at all…
Life sucks, I really feel ya. 80 and 89 = B…
Come on America…

That’s why I’d rather have our GPAs factored based on our numerical grade rather than a straight conversion from letter to a 4.0 scale. That way, the difference between a high B and low B would show up as a slight difference in the 4.0 GPA scale.

Then again, you really can’t expect rounding to be fair either. It’s not really right for a kid with .49 below an A+ end up with the same grade as a kid who had his B+ rounded up.
