Ivy leagues, top 20 ranked schools

Oh i see, okay i will check it out, I think out of all the schools Stanford is my biggest reach school i want to get into because they have a really good mathematics area. And that resides in california so that would be so awesome, doing more research on everything! thanks a ton @ejcclc

OP, are you a dual citizen or only a US citizen? If you are only a US citizen then you will need to submit your SAT scores to many Canadian schools. Your SAT score would be an automatic rejection from McGill.

Stanford is a private university therefore will have no bias towards instate students.

Oh! that’s good to know thanks ejcclc

I was selected to be a loran scholar from my school but because i don’t wanna stay in canada, I didn’t even go through with it. Maybe it’s just how i put everything, i may sound like i’m not qualified, but there’s so much more than that SAT score and that’s something i can improve on definitely and plan to! I’m a dual citizen, canada and usa.
I’m not even that great a writer but i got a 9 on my sat essay which i thought would be my worst but writing was my best to a surprise. I will do better on the next one! That was just my first SAT ever.I didn’t do research as far ahead as most people so i didn’t have as much preparation time @TomSrOfBoston

The problem now is that you have essentially two months to prepare for and take the SAT as well as complete your applications, which for most entails supplemental essays. If you don’t broaden your search to include less competitive schools, you might find yourself shut out. It has happened.

I have Loyola University Chicago on my list as well. Do you think i have a good chance of getting in? I’m taking the SAT in nov and SAT subject tests in Dec, but i have preparing for the SAT since school started. Im taking my sat subject test on math & chemistry so it shouldn’t be too bad studying for them as i am taking chemistry 12 & calculus so it’ll be helpful to my classes as well! and my university class i am taking ends in the beginning of december so after that i will have alot of time to re check before i submit everything! @ejcclc

OK, so you live in Canada, you are a US citizen (but with no residence in a US state) and you need significant financial aid. Your test scores are inadequate for admission in a top 20 school. You plan to retake but probably won’t get scores back in time to know if you’ve improved enough to be competitive for admission. Even if you score brilliantly, all of your top choices are a gamble, because they are a gamble for everybody. Apply to a few if your heart is set on it, but don’t get your hopes up.

State universities in the US, especially flagships, are stingy with merit for OOS students. So you might get in, but chances are you wouldn’t be able to afford them. You “might” do better at second or third tier state schools.

You need some safeties and matches. I recommend: 1) schools in Canada - I know this is not your preference but you really, really need a backup or two. I’m not an expert on Canadian options, but my impression is that the costs are reasonable compared to the US. 2) Smaller, less-competitive private colleges in the US that offer merit aid and/or meet demonstrated need. Look for schools that practice holistic admission where your CURRENT stats are at least at the 75% mark (google common data set and the college name to find this information). You could also look at test optional or text flexible schools. A good place to start is fairtest.org However, be aware that many test optional schools want to see those scores if you apply for merit scholarships.

There are many places where you can get a fine math degree. Do well in college and maybe you’ll end up at a top 20 for grad school.

I don’t believe you can be a California resident but live in Canada.

@sstrawberriess
You have lot of EC. One of the thing top colleges look for is how much focus did you put in EC and what did you achieve. For example if you played tennis
did you play for the School (varsity) if so what line did you play. Did the school will the championship at region/state/national level. If you did not play in school do you have a USTA or ITA ranking. Some of these college have kids who have performed EC at very high level and have grades comparable to you.

Also, need you know if you are female or minority. Your chances are higher for NYU than Stanford.

Oh i see, yea that’s true, all of my sports are for the senior teams, we only have senior or junior teams they’re not called varsity here but senior is the highest level! Ohh i see, yeah i wouldn’t say i preformed at very high levels for EC sports because i only played for my school :0 If i score really high in the section that i want to pursue in university, like math, would they consider that instead of my overall SAT score, and if i did great on the SAT subject test for math as well?

I am a female and from india. Oh yea very true, these schools are pretty much a long shot for me, that’s why they’re called dream schools i guess. I am planning to apply to University of Pennsylvania for sure out of all of them and USC. If my essay is really sincere and down to earth, it’s pretty deep LOL, would you think i have a chance. It’s just about my personal growth throughout the years for the common app. @bk1366

@strawberriess Now that I got more info. I would recommend to look at school that has low % of women and minorities. For example Carnegie Mellon University has more male than female students. If you want to math, they would take a lower score. If you look at LAC there do not have lot of minorities. Colleges such as Bates, Colby, etc prefer minorities. If you want money (merit) you can forget about top school. The merit aid is inversely proportional to USN ranking. Higher the ranking less the money.

Oh really, but i thought the higher schools offer more financial aid? I wanted to get financial aid and i qualify for their below 60,000$ guaranteed aid @bk1366

OP- you are getting good advice and you are not listening to it. Now, you want to apply to UPenn?

You are an ORM international applicant with no hooks and a 1700+ SAT with as yet no SAT II’s applying to Ivy and very very selective schools. Your essays if stellar will help but will not get you into a selective school unless there is something very compelling and you have not shared it with us.

What does your GC think of your chances at these schools?

What are your safeties?

Look up the CDS for these schools and look at the stats for accepted students and compare your stats to these stats.

Please have realistic safety schools, match schools and reach schools. The emphasis is on realistic. Maybe one dream school. Good luck.

I don’t think CMU is a safety or even a match. Look at the CDS for their scores. It’s a selective school to get into even with the gender imbalance. Sure females will have an edge but they still have to have strong test scores.

Upenn was already one of my options i just didn’t list it earlier. if my sat score are in low 2000s do you believe i have a chance then? my goal is to get into the 2000s this coming saturday! if my score increases then i am going to consider all the higherup schools i wanted to but if not then just upenn for an ivy reach @goingnutsmom

CMU reports CR 700-800 was 47% and Math 700-800 was 78%. The acceptance rate for MCS was 20%. Also test scores are assessed as Very Important.

Have you looked into test optional schools with lots of merit or that meet 100% financial need?

Find safeties you can afford.

It’s clear you haven’t researched your target colleges. You don’t have strong scores (even if you get 2000,), are missing some, have a mishmash of activities that includes folding programs and don’t seem to understand finaid or what these schools expect,. whether you’ll be reviewed as a citizen or international or what a safety is
Your competition among kids from Canada with be highly prepared and able to show the colleges why they match, not guess. You have to put the energy into this. And have backups.

You are NOT an int’l applicant. You are a domestic applicant with int’l residency-- not an uncommon situation. That means you qualify for US Federal and school-sponsored FA for domestic students. But since you are not a resident of any US state, you do NOT qualify for lower in-state tuition rates at public universities for that state’s residents.

That’s generally true. But FIRST you’ve got to get admitted into the school. You do not have a competitive profile for top 20 schools.

Maybe its one of those “grass is greener” things, but what on earth is wrong with McGill or Waterloo?

Some schools will put applicants that are US citizens living internationally with the international pool. In other words, these domestic students compete within that much more competitive pool. That’s what I meant.

People here are giving you good advise. What are your safety schools?
