Ivy Observations

The 'Social Ivy' only 5th??
:-)

And Cornell in front of Penn? You do know that Cornell has so many suicides that they had to put up nets by the bridges, right?

Are all of you being sarcastic when you say you're judging the OVERALL quality of ug education but with the addendum that its only because of a certain major?

Did your same interest in business prompt you to put Penn at #7 in terms of undergraduate quality? I'm not quite sure I understand. What exactly -is- undergraduate quality, anyway? Princeton, NJ is in an excellent location. Why settle for the humdrum bustling metropolis of Manhattan, Boston, or Philadelphia, or the remote serenity of Hanover and Ithaca when you can go to Princeton, which isn't any of those? I love how Columbia doesn't even rank on your list of surrounding campus safety. I guess it gets an impressive 9 out of 8.

Long live the king! May the force be with you! Er...yeah.

Columbia is supposed to be 7..sorry it won't let me edit

oo sorry and ignore the business thing in front of dartmouth...i forgot to delete it when i copied and pasted (I did this and then changed the order). Don't get all up in arms Pennies/Penites/..? :)

I really only want to apply to one Ivy as a super reach.. lol. Initially, I was leaning towards Princeton because it's in my home state, is very undergrad focused, and has been my dream school for quite some time... After visiting Penn, though, I have become torn. How would you guys rate Penn's undergrad focus for Bio, Chem, or Biochem majors as opposed to Princeton's? Also, I plan to become a doctor.. would Princeton or Penn have a stronger pre-med track/ acceptance to med school rate? Thanks so much for all your input.. and Penn is SUCH an amazing school :-)

dude, I live in jersey too, actually only like 15 min. away from p-ton. Seriously though, do you actually wanna stay in NJ? I absolutely hate it here, lol. But Princeton academics and the beautiful campus have convinced me to apply RD. But Penn just blew me away and for academic reasons (business), I'm going to apply ED. The gorgeous campus in the city, the social scene, the career opportunities, etc are pretty amazing.

Give me some of your expectations or things you want in a college, and maybe I can give you a bit more feedback.

And yeh, I think Penn is pretty strong for Bio-engineering, anything bio-related, and does well in placement for med school. I'm not sure how it compares to P-ton though.

Thanks for the imput! My college preferences: in or relatively near a city, not super cut-throat student body (like I don't think I'd fit in at Hopkins), social and fun campus, great financial aid, internship/ volunteering opportunities at hospitals (or shadowing doctors), medium-sized campus, not a snobby student body, strong science program... my primary concern is financial aid... do you think I would get about the same amount of financial aid from Penn as I would from Pton? Thanks again..

Ohh, I also want to go to a school that places a great emphasis on undergrad education, not many HUGE classes, not many TA's...

Well I haven't had many HUGE classes, but i've had many a TA. Some of them are excellent and add to the education experience. Others, well, suck. it's hit or miss.

Good heavens, I wish I was in a position to rank the top colleges in the country. If I get accepted to one, I'm going, ranked #1 or #8 for best campus. Dang, they're all in the top eight for education and resources, they're all beautiful, the students in my school would build an altar for me if I get to go there. There are different sorts of schools which determines which I apply to, of course, but if I had to go to Brown instead of Princeton even though I like Princeton's campus better, I wouldn't mind that much :)

How could someone with such a high post count still be so rational?

The whole point of these forums is to make everybody realize that every school is HORRIBLE except for the one you cheerlead. That's right, HORRIBLE. Princeton is HORRIBLE if you get in there. And Brown is HORRIBLE.

Now some people may be mistaken and say Penn is HORRIBLE, but they are bad people and after some mob-like assaults and personal character destruction, justice is restored.

That's the way CC works. Huzzah!

It's because I've spent so much time here that I lost my Yale or Bust drive. I've read so many good things about other schools, criticisms of my dream school and of those other schools, asked questions and got the spectrum of attitudes back (positive and negative). So now I think it's all pretty much the same deal, with different issues at each school.

Will I be hunted down for that, esp. since this is the UPenn forum? What a way to go; I'd hate for that to be in my obituary. "tkm256 died Saturday evening from wounds inflicted by angry UPenn applicants citing slander and disrespect for the CC boards."

ecm,
I think you would be happy at either Penn or Pton. Penn ED will probably be "easier" (I use that word loosely, but as a comparison), but you won't be able to compare any finaid packages. Pton has phenomenal finaid bc of its no-loan policy, but I think Penn students are pretty happy with their finaid.

I'm not at Pton yet, but I sometimes think that the whole undergrad focus is not always true. You'll still have precepts with TAs and there will be bad professors at any school.

I think Penn is more social, because it has a bigger student body, is in philly and has frats. The whole social scene at pton basically revolves around the eating clubs. It may or may not be your thing.

Both schools are excellent in the sciences. Penn Med School is partial to its undergrads, I've heard. Princeton, of course, does not have professional schools.

So do you think Penn and Princeton would more or less give me the same amount of financial aid? I am going to apply for as many outside scholarships as I can, so hopefully I'd be able to eliminate the loan part of Penn's financial aid... also, is it possible to use outside scholarships the reduce the parental contribution?

I think after they eliminate your workstudy and student contribution, they take half of your scholarship. Like, if you had $1000, and you have already eliminated loans, work study, etc, they would give you $500 less grant and your parental would go down $500 as well. I'm really iffy about this, and I'm sure it differs from school to school.
Does Penn have a finaid calculator? There's a princeton one online that's pretty accurate.

No, njchino371, no nets on Cornell's bridges. . . .Cornell's a lot of work, but there's also a lot of opportunity to have a lot of fun. Despite popular belief, most Cornellians do not consider jumping off bridges, unless we're jumping into the gorge at a place where the water is deep enough to be safe.

Anyway, here's my list:

Nicest campus (based upon what I was looking for):
1) Princeton
2) Cornell
3) Columbia
4) Brown
5) Dartmouth
6) Penn
7) Harvard
8) Yale

Social life:
1) Princeton
2) Brown
3) Dartmouth
4) Cornell
5) Penn
6) Columbia
7) Yale
8) Harvard

Campus/ surrounding city safety:
1) Dartmouth
2) Cornell
3) Princeton
4) Penn
5) Brown
6) Harvard
8) Yale

Quality of Undergrad education (overall):
1) Dartmouth- because it is purely focused on undergrads
2) Yale
3) Cornell
4) Brown
5) Princeton
6) Penn
7) Columbia
8) Harvard- Too many TAs teaching classes, according to what I hear.

Location:
1) Penn
2) Columbia
3) Harvard
4) Yale
5) Brown
6) Princeton
7) Cornell
8) Dartmouth
