No way cornell gives a better ugrad education than penn. it has all the 'drawbacks' of being a big research university compounded to new levels of suck.

zante,
is that the old or new policy? (It sounds more like the old, because of the halfs and stuff.)

"new levels of suck". I like that. =P

Hairy Chested Men Ditty...

Oh, Harvard's run by Wellesley and Welleslsey's run by Yale
Yale is run by Vasser and Vasser's run by tail
Harvard's full of pretty boys and drunkards go to Penn
But far above Cayuga there's a race of hairy men

We are the race of hairy-chested men
Uh hairy-chested men, uh hairy-chested men
We are the race of uh hairy-chested men
We are from Cornell

If I had a prick of steel and balls of solid brass
I'd find a marble statue, and ram it up her a**
We'd breed a race of giants, who'd roam throughout the land
To swell the glorious chorus of "the Quakers be damned."

Go Big Red!

Then of course, there is this version:

"Don't send my son to Harvard, the dying mother said.
Don't send my son to Yale, I'd rather see him dead.
Send him off to Darmouth, or better yet, Cornell.
And as for Pennsylvania, I'll see him first in hell!

"To hell, to hell with Pennsylvania,
To hell, to hell with Pennsylvania.
To hell, to hell with Pennsylvania.
To hell with U of P-- P-U!

"We were only, only, foolin',
We were only, only, foolin',
We were only, only, foolin'--
The hell we were! P-U! P-U!"

um...Cornell CAS is actually smaller than Penn CAS, and has as high or higher sat scores than Penn CAS. Cornell CAS is 1330-1500 and Penn as a university is 1330-1500, which is helped by engineering and wharton.

Cornell also attracts the requisite science and math types that Penn doesn't, greatly increasing their SAT range.

Cornell gets punished by the revealed preference ranking, and the SAT range really means nothing.

I feel like everyone on this site has a subconscious bias against Cornell, and everyone thinks it's like the "fake" Ivy that became part of the ivy league through some sort of accident or misunderstanding. That really annoys me, because it really holds it's own against many of the other schools, and it's large size is its biggest asset, because it gives it a type of "diversity" that other Ivies definitely lack. Just something I've noticed on these boards...

gee, the revealed preference rating lists duke as like 17, which is like ridiculous, i think that someone would rather go to duke than Notre Dame, sorry.

Princeton, Penn, & Dartmouth have the nicest campuses. Harvard & Brown have the worst.

Penn, Brown, Dartmouth, & Princeton offer the best social life. The social life at Harvard is poor.

Princeton, Dartmouth, & Cornell are particularly safe. Columbia & Penn are particularly unsafe.

Yale, Princeton, Dartmouth, & Penn provide the best undegraduate education.

Harvard, Columbia, and Penn have the best locations. Dartmouth and Cornell have relatively poor locations.

Yale, princeton, dart, and penn provide the best undergrad education?

really, that's interesting?

plz, tell me how Penn beats out harvard, brown, and columbia?

This has nothing to do wiith my preferences. It is based on the responses of people that answered this post. Disagree with them, not me. :)

can someone tell me why upenn is so unsafe?

It's in West Philly.

it's not nearly as bad as it was 10 years ago, and it will get better every year as more and more Penntrification of the surrounding neighborhood takes place (two new retail/residential complexes are breaking ground this year, one on the 3400 block one on the 3900 block...yes yes yes

Although Penn is technically in West Philly, a lot of people including myself see campus as being pretty safe, and the stereotypical "West Philly," with the danger that entails, as beginning only beyond the Westmost boundary of campus, on 40th street.

I have been out past 45th street after 2am and have never had a problem or seen a potential problem. West Philadelphia is not the best/safest place on the east coast, but everywhere you could practically want to go within 5-10 blocks of campus is very safe. the only thing i have heard about this year was a bike that was stolen in the middle of the night. i walked about 15 blocks northwest of campus last week around dusk and although it was not the nicest area (there were a couple dilapidated and such), police were continually driving by and i didn't feel threatened by anyone in any way. West philly's reputation as a dangerous ghetto is horribly overblown. my roommate just got back from yale however and said that new haven is in far worse condition.

You need to have some street smarts. You WILL be stopped and asked for change by the vagrants around campus. You must be able to shrug it off and not be intimidated.

The iPod helps with this matter.

Street smarts are an invaluable thing Penn "teaches" you.

I spent the summer wandering around on my own in Seoul, Tokyo, and Beijing and had no trouble getting my urban bearings and keeping my wits about me. Heaven help the poor Dartmouth lad who sets foot in Itaewon!

I use a cell phone to avoid that problem.

Sorry- this is late to the party, but has to be said: Hey Wharf Rat!

Far above Cayugas Waters
There's an awful smell
Some says it's Cayuga's Waters
We know it's Cornell
Sons of Btches
Sons of Bstards
Forty Thousand Strong
Forty Thousand Horses *sses call themselves Cornell

(Actually I think pretty much every Ivy has at least one version of Cayuga's Waters- Harvard's has three verses- I think that says something)
