Ivy Scholars at Yale University

I did GL last year, hopefully I will have time to do APPLE this year.

this program is very focused on the humanities right?

yeah; it’s all about philosophy, history, political science, etc… I’m thinking of applying for the summer of 2013, but what im somewhat worried about is this: I’m interested in economics and social science and based on what it says on the brochure, it seems like an interesting program. I like the fact that I’ll be learning how to write a college level research paper and that I’ll be able to participate in discussions with people interested in things I’m interested in, but what I’m worried about is, will there be a lot of debating ? I love participating in small group discussions, but I am really bad at debating or public speaking… will I be able to improve my debating skills by attending this program? or is this program not good for someone who’s not really a debater? I love everything about this program, except the fact that I might be debating and making speeches… can anyone who has done this program tell me more about whether this program is very much public-speaking / debate-oriented? thanks in advance :)

Got an email for my deferred acceptance to the 2013 program.
Anybody else from last year receive that?

Got the e-mail as well.

Anybody in the Houston area going to PLE (July 13 ~26)?

For alumni of the program, what was the focus of your answer/topics you discussed (i.e. was the essay very personal or more generic)? I’m not sure how to approach this essay so any help would be MUCH appreciated.

Thanks so much!

How much discount did deferred acceptance receivers from last year receive?

i am applying as well.have no idea how to address the essay, help!

My son attended last year and won a top award. I think there are many acceptable ways to tackle the questions. DS wrote one single essay where he answered all of the questions in order. I recall he was right at the word limit. His essay was very personal. I questioned the format he used, and I don’t recall exactly what he said his reasoning was for writing it the way he wrote it (all in one essay, instead of divided by question), but it worked. I would focus less on trying to impress the committee with your awesomeness (because most of the students applying are awesome), and more on talking about who you REALLY are, how you will add to the program (skills/abilities you bring to it), what you hope to gain from the program (what you see as your weaknesses and how the program might help shore them up), etc. For instance, I remember that DS talked about the fact that it seemed that most of his friends thought you couldn’t be successful in life unless you were in student government, but at his school, student gov’t is focused on planning dances and spirit actiivities. While school spirit is important to the high school experience, event planning wasn’t an interest of his, so he had found other opportunities to serve in school where he felt he could have more of an impact.

DS attended highly selective summer programs every summer from 6th grade forward, and Yale IS GS was by far the most beneficial to him as a student, as well as a college/scholarship applicant. The students who attend are among the brightest anywhere (many from DS’s cohort have been accepted EA to Top 10 schools), yet I think that Yale wants to have a clear idea of how you will benefit from their program and how you plan to use the knowledge you gain there, rather than only what skills and abilities you bring. I have no insider knowledge. I just know that my son’s approach was to be honest and focus on himself as a “whole student” (strengths AND weaknesses) rather than just highlight strengths and downplay weaknesses. One caveat: when you talk about your weaknesses, explain how the program will help you address them. For instance, writing has been a weakness for my son, so he talked about how he was excited for the chance to take the writing seminar (which, by the way, really has helped him a lot this year.)

@Phyllis, I’m applying as well. Hopefully we’ll see each other there–wish us luck!

@happykidsmom, thank you for the thorough answer!

Does anyone know whether the two teacher recommendations go in one large, all-encompassing envelope? Or two separate envelopes later to be put into a larger one?

I got an acceptance email for this year’s Global Scholars Grand Strategy seminar since I sent in an early application!
I’ve been seeing posts on this thread about a reading list, though. What is this, exactly, since I know nothing about it?
Is there anything that alums recommend I do to prepare?
Thanks!

I applied early and got into the PLE program! I’d also like to ask what sompao asked: “Is there anything that alums recommend I do to prepare?”
Thanks in advance! :)

Anyone else wait listed? :(

Got into Grand Strategy for this summer. Anyone up for a Facebook group?

Got into PLE early as well.

A facebook group would be awesome! Definitely up for it…there hasn’t been an Ivy/Global Scholars facebook group in a while.

I’m submitting my application for PLE’s regular deadline. Can you give me some tips on how you wrote the 1000 word personal statement essay? Thanks!!

I made it to Grand Strategy early, as well. On the facebook page for YYGS, the admins posted in a comment that they’ll create an official page once all the early applicants have registered - so nothing we can do at the moment.
As for the essay - just talk about what sets you apart, why you chose the program, what inspired you to be interested in politics, and what qualifies you to be accepted (what experience or prior knowledge makes you exceptional). Good luck!

Thanks! Hope to see you guys who got accepted into PLE at Yale this summer! Really looking forward! Can’t wait until 5/22!

Congrats to you all, I was fortunate enough to receive defferred admission from last year. Hope to see you all in Grand Strategy :)

PLEs: look at the new FaceBook group …
